Glossary

Anterior towards the front.

Cranial facing towards the skull.

Caudal for vertebra the side facing towards the tail.

Distal the edge of the tooth towards the back/posterior of the mouth

Dorsal for vertebra the side facing up, towards the back.

Labial towards the lip. the flat labial side of the tooth

Lateral towards the side. For teeth, like human incisors.

Lingual towards the tongue. the convex lingual side of a tooth

Mesial the edge of a tooth towards the front/anterior of the mouth

Para-symphyseal if there is no single symphyseal, there is a pair of para-symphyseals.

Posterior towards the back.

Proximal for extremities, the side closest to the body.

Serrated like the teeth of a fine saw, not smooth

Symphyseal the single, central tooth in some species (Cow shark)

Ventral for vertebra, the side facing down, towards the belly
