Bruce Lippy, Ph.D., CIH, CSP

DR. BRUCE LIPPY Bruce Lippy has a Ph.D. in policy from the University of Maryland, with coursework concentrated in regulatory economics and quantitative measures of management. His doctoral research was on communicating the hazards of operating and maintaining innovative environmental technologies for cleaning up the Department of Energy’s nuclear weapons complex. His work led to the development of over 150 Technology Safety Data Sheets for the Department of Energy. His undergraduate degree is a B.A. summa cum laude in biology from Western Maryland College. He has been certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene since July 1985 (#3023) and in the comprehensive practice of safety since November 1992 (#11472).He has served on the Department of Homeland Security’s Training and Data Exchange (TRADE) committee, the HAMMER facility’s Medical Surveillance Subcommittee, the White House Office of Science  and Technology Policy’s Nanoscale Environment and Health Initiative, the Chesapeake Region Safety Council’s Advisory Board, Catonsville Community College’s Health and Safety Program Advisory Board, the National Response Team’s Training and Health & Safety committees, and the EPA-Labor Superfund Task Force.He has given over fifty professionals presentations, co-authored numerous articles and written chapters for the Levy and Sidel 2002 text, “Terrorism and Public Health” and the 1991 Peters and Peters Sourcebook on Asbestos Disease. Dr. Lippy was awarded the EPA’s Bronze Medal for meritorious service on the EPA/Labor Superfund Task Force in June, 2004.

Bernard A. Mizula, MS, CHS-V, CET, RPIH

Bernie MizulaBernard Mizula has worked on several projects for the Lippy Group including the development of training modules on the four top causes of fatalities on construction jobs. He has served as project lead on the creation of EPA asbestos training programs for workers, supervisors and inspectors, tailored to heavy equipment operators and stationary engineers of the International Union of Operating Engineers. Since 1997, Mr. Mizula has been providing environmental, occupational safety and health, emergency preparedness, incident command system (ICS), hazardous waste and hazardous materials consultation and training.  He recently received professional certification through the American College of Forensic Examiners International in homeland security at the highest level, Certified in Homeland Security-Level V.  He received his formal training from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell’s Work Environment Department, where he earned his M.S. Degree in Work Environment.  For the past year, Mr. Mizula has operated his own consulting firm, Mizula, LLC. For the previous eight years Mr. Mizula worked with The New England Consortium (TNEC), based at University of Massachusetts at Lowell. 

Mark Perks, Ph.D.

Bernie MizulaDr. Mark Perks serves as a consultant to the Lippy Group, primarily to provide direct training on the chemistry of hazardous materials. His sessions are always lively, based on demonstrations, group experiments and model building of chemical molecules.  He is a senior lecturer for the University of Maryland Baltimore County. His primary responsibility is undergraduate instruction in the introductory chemistry and organic chemistry programs. Dr. Perks applies his understanding of information dissemination technologies to enhance education for his students and for the workers trained by the Lippy Group. Dr. Perks is also a member of the UMBC group of the Maryland Collaborative for Teacher Preparation, a University of Maryland system-wide initiative to improve the math and science preparation of middle-school science teachers in Maryland. Leonard Burrelli, MS

Mr. Burrelli has an undergraduate degree in biology from Bucknell University and a masters in management from the University of Maryland. He has project management responsibilities for environmental, health, safety and industrial hygiene projects performed by Environmental Profiles, Inc. and serves as a consultant to The Lippy Group to provide training on analytical techniques. He provides technical consulting services to government agencies and commercial industries.  Areas of expertise include occupational exposure assessments as well as design and implementation of management system procedures for EHS services for the company’s clients. 
Based on more than twelve years of laboratory experience in materials evaluation using electron and optical microscopy techniques, Mr. Burrelli conducts specialized research for the evaluation of analytical techniques and methods for microscopic assessments of occupational exposures for asbestos.

Environmental Profiles, Inc
.


The Lippy Group, LLC has a permanent teaming relationship with an excellent Industrial Hygiene consulting firm, Environmental Profiles, Inc., (EPI). The firm, headed by John Spencer, CIH, CSP, has eight Certified Industrial Hygienistsand three Certified Safety Professionals who are capable of collecting a broad range of industrial hygiene samples. The Lippy Group defers to EPI for sampling, but uses EPI technical experts to assist in developing and conducting specialized training through the Lippy Group. Dr. Lippy also serves as a senior consultant to EPI, providing technical analysis on legal cases involving hazard communication, specifically the efficacy of warnings, labels, and Material Safety Data Sheets.

Roger Buchanan

Roger BuchananMr. Buchanan has studied drama and communication at the University of Southern California, Miami Dade andJames Madison University. He has appeared in dozens of plays ranging from serious drama like the Duchess of Malfi to musicals like My Fair Lady in venues on both coasts, including several at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Vagabonds Theater in Baltimore. He co-authored the script for a film that won the Young Baltimorean Film Festival. He edits scripts and provides vocal recordings for Lippy Group productions.



 

 

Mike Cooper, MPH, CIH

mike cooperMike Cooper has a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Toxicology from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York and a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH) in Industrial Hygiene from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  He is working with the CPWR – The Center for Construction Research and Training to evaluate the effectiveness of technologies for controlling exposure to silica during the cutting and grinding of masonry materials.  Mike has served as an Industrial Hygienist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where he assessed problems with indoor environments, acted as an asbestos inspector and provided training on respiratory protection, hearing conservation and ergonomics. He also served on the board of directors of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Potomac Section where he planned meetings and member participation in local science fairs.

Mike is working with the Lippy Group to develop a confined space training manual.

James August, MPH

mike cooperJames August earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California – Los Angeles and is a Senior Policy Advisor to the Lippy Group.  He directed the Occupational Safety and Health Program for the 1.4 million member American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).  He played a major role in OSHA, EPA, HHS rulemakings and policy forums on asbestos, lead, ergonomics pandemic influenza, smallpox vaccination, tuberculosis, bloodborne pathogens, and personal protective equipment.  Mr. August has testified before House and Senate committees and lobbied for federal laws concerning asbestos, emergency preparedness, extending OSHA coverage to all state and local government workers, and the Needlestick Prevention and Safety Act.  He developed curricula and delivered educational programs on a wide range of topics utilizing innovative participatory adult education techniques.  He has written union health and safety manuals and numerous fact sheets.
