- List of Lists
- This site has software and other internet and
computer-related sites listed by category. There are about
120 categories. Pick a category and get a description and
links to software or sites. Most software seems to be
freeware, my favorite. But, please note, that this site says
they have not tested the software listed here. Descriptions
come from the sites they link to.
- Major Geeks
- Major Geeks categorizes the applications it has
available for download. These categories are major
categories, with no sub-categories. For me, its drawback is
that everything is not freeware. But, for each program it
identifies its cost category (freeware, shareware, adware,
etc) with the price, OS supported, size, version, and date of
version. The programs are listed alphabetically with a very
brief description. One drawback that I see, is that it might
just show a paid version when there is a free version
available. For instance, it only has a paid version of
ZoneAlarm.
- Download.com
- Download provides you with a large list of
programs you can download, by category.
Most are shareware, some are free.
This site is from CNet. They let you know how long it will take
to download, how large a file it is, and how many have downloaded
each file.
This is a well-known site and should be reliable, but the
Clif Note's Newsletter has come out with a warning about
this site. Be careful with what they say. For instance,
WeatherBug, which contains adware, is specified as
spyware-free. They do not tell you it contains adware.
Similarly there is
PC
World Downloads
and
ZDNet,
which is huge. Too bad you can't just ask to see the
free ones. You have to wade through them all, but they do
tell you.
- PricelessWare
- This group has voted on the best free software, and I must
agree that it is a pretty good list. Information and links
for downloads for each program.
- Tob's Web
Page
- This site has a page of links to many freeware sites.
That's the kind of software I like. But there are a lot of
other good technical links at Tob's Web Page .
- Sailcat Graphics
- This is more of a personal page (even though he also
has about his graphics business) with a good list of what he
feels is the best freeware in different categories. Check his
freeware link.
- Tech Support Alert
- If you want someone else's list of best places to download
software, Gizmo has a very good list. He's someone who's much
more involved in this than I am.
