- Back to the Fifties
- Remember the old songs from the fifties. Listen to them
again in Real Audio streaming or download them. This site is
great. Make a playlist and then you can listen while you surf.
From the home page, find the door marked 'Back To The
Fifties' and click it to enter.
- Playa Cofi
Jukebox
- This site has jukebox's from 1950 to 1984. No special
player is needed. Just pick your year and listen while you
work. They also have special jukeboxes for show tunes, folk
music, country music, and a bunch more categories.
The RIAA had shut them down, but they came back quickly.
They had to make some adjustments in how the songs are
played. For each year there are about 30 songs, but you see
the names of only about 8 that you can start with, but
then they play randomly after that. You can't replay a song.
But, hey, great music and memories.
- Skreemr
- You used to be able to download free music. I've
mentioned above a place to find some music to download or
listen to. Elsewhere I've also mentioned downloading videos
from YouTube and others, and then extracting the music to an
MP3 file. Well, here at Skreemr you can still find
popular music to download. I don't know if it is legal, but
it is there and I've found no ads to disturb me.
Skreemr has links to other sites to get the music.
Some are just samples, some are by artists different from what
it says, and some will be what you want. You can tell by the
file size, before you download, if it is just a sample. Maybe
all you want is a sample.
- Television
Tunes
- Wouldn't you like to listen to or remember some of the
theme songs from TV shows you used to listen to? The Lone
Ranger, Mary Tyler Moore, Friends, why you name it, it's
probably here. Now this is c-o-o-l!! The shows are listed
alphabetically.
-
New Brunswick, New Jersey, Goodbye - Bands, Dirty
Basements, and the Search for Self
- I have to make a plug here, the only one on my site.
This book is written by my son, Ronen. It's about him and the
punk bands of NJ during his 4-year stint at Rutgers.
Well-written. Interesting read. If you prefer to use the old
favorite amazon.com or walmart.com, just search on 'Ronen'.
The book will be the first thing shown. A couple of other
places to check are HubCityBook at
MySpace and his own site KamiKaze Words .
- Music of the
Fifties
- This site provides you with the lyrics to songs of the
fifties.
While reading the lyrics, the song plays in the background.
Sorry, it is music only.
There are also stories about people and music of the
fifties. I enjoy this site immensely, and I thank the
authors.
Music is just a part of this site.
The site is dedicated to remembering the fifties,
with links to other fifties sites.
So start at the home page:
The Fifties
- Jews
Who Rock
- Now here's the place to find out about the Jews who
have made a name for themselves in Rock n' Roll.
More than a list, get some info about each one.
- Lyric's World
- Lyric's World brings you the top songs since
1930. How can you beat it? I love it. Strangely enough, you
won't see the name Lyric's World on the Home page,
but you'll see it on the pages you link to which have the top
songs. The links are in the middle of the Home page. This
site belongs to a web ring of lyrics sites, even though I
doubt any will beat this site.
- Lyrics Style
- Lyrics Style is indexed by the singer's name
and then for each singer the songs are listed for each album.
That will link you to the lyrics. Quite a good collection of
contemporary singers. Like so many other sites, they list the
singers alphabetically by the first name.
- Sing365
- This site has so much, but a lot of ads too. I did not
notice any pop-ups, so the ads aren't too bad to handle. You
can browse alphabetically on the singer's or group's name, or
you can search by name, album, song, or even text. Most of
the names I never heard of, but everyone I looked for was
there: Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Fats Domino, Nina Simone are some
examples just to show you how complete this is, not just
current singers.
-
Analyne's World of Lyrics
- There are many sites on the net where you can find
lyrics. You can usually find them by just searching for
a song title in Google or your favorite browser. When I am
looking for the lyrics from a song I hear on my favorite soft
rock station I just go to Analyne's World of Music . I
usually find it there.
- Lyrics Freaks
- One of the nice things about this site is that for
each song it gives links to other songs, ones with
lyrics that you might like when you like this song.
-
The NPR 100
- National Public Radio's All Things Considered
had a poll of what was considered the most important American
musical works of the 20th Century. This site not only has
the results, but there are audios that explore the stories
behind these musical works. You will need Real
Audio. These stories may last from 5 to 15 minutes. There are
interviews in these audios with those involved, where
possible. During each audio some of the song is played. Very
interesting programs.
-
The Beatle's Page
- If you'd like to see lyrics to
Beatle's music, here is THE site. Click on the image next to
The Beatle's Album and get a list, on the left half
of the page, of all albums and song titles released in the
U.S. by The Beatles, organized by release date. Then click on
a song and get the lyrics on the right half of the page.
- Spirit of Sinatra
- The singer I like the best is Frank
Sinatra. And he sings great songs. This site has not just the
lyrics to his songs, but his album list, movies, quotes and
more. Great place to visit Sinatra.
Lyrics
Freak has the lyrics to quite a few of Sinatra's songs.
Actually, there's so many others you'll also.
-
Elvex Pages - Elvis
- In competition with the Beatle's lyrics is this site
with the lyrics to all of Elvis' music. I prefer the lyrics to
the Beatle's, but Elvis is so big I had to include him.
-
Todd's Lyrics and Links
- Todd Peach has a fantastic list of lyrics from the
great composers and my favorite old time singers. Most of
the songs for composers are those done by these singers. The
singers are Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Tony
Bennett, Judy Garland, and a few others. The composers are
George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Burt Bacharach, Oscar
Hammerstein, Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mercer, and more. I
think you get the idea. Some have a biography. He also has
links to other sites for singers he likes.
-
Demented Lyrics
- Now here is a site with the
lyrics to the old crazy songs, like those of Alan Sherman or
Tom Lehrer. They even have Abbott and Costello's famous 'Who's
On First' routine. But they are missing 'Grandma Got Run Over
By a Reindeer'. Oh well, can't have everything.
So, since I mentioned it, you can find that at many
sites, but try
Fractured Christmas Carols while we're talking about
Demented Lyrics.
- Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame
- This is the site of the museum in Cleveland. The part I
like about it is the list of inductees gives an
interesting background on each. One thing missing is a
discography, but it's easy enough to do a search from my
favorite search engines.
-
Billy Joel
- Billy Joel has sung quite a few songs with great
lyrics. This page has links to the lyrics of his songs, in
alpahabetical order. Now, if only somebody had a place to
download the music, but then that might not be legal. At
least I can get the words to 'We Didn't Start the Fire'. By
the way, if you want to see the songs listed by album, then
he has it at
Billy Joel
Matt also has lyrics from other groups, but the only other ones
that interest me are the Beatles and Fleetwood Mac. You
can get his full listing at
Matt's Music Page Index Click on the group, and then
click Lyrics.
-
Star Pulse
- Star Pulse is a pretty good place to find the
lyrics of top stars, from Sinatra to Shania Twain. Quite a
range. Click on the letter (first letter of last name), click
on the artist, click on lyrics, and then you have a choice of
a few different sites with lyrics. For instance, one for
Sinatra, they say has over 1200. There are also links for
biography, discography, etc.
- TV Tunes
Online
- Can't remember how a theme song from an old TV show
goes? Head on over to TV Tunes Online and look up the
lyrics. No music, but the tunes come back as you see the
words; well, at least for me they do.
- Carly Simon
- Carly Simon has done some great songs. This Official
Website has the lyrics to all her songs, and cross references
them to the albums. It also has various interviews she's had
about who 'You're So Vain' is about, from 1973 to present, in
case that is something that interests you. There is also a
long autobiography and recent news about Carly.
- Fleetwood Mac
- I am not a big Fleetwood Mac fan, but I do like some of
their songs, like Landslide . What I like about this
site is that if you go to Discography, besides for the
Lyrics, there are detailed interpretations of the lyrics.
Note that these are not the interpretations of the lyricist.
Speaking about song interpretations, one of the songs
richest in meaning is American Pie by Don McLean.
Understanding
American Pie gives you what appears to be a very good
interpretation of each line.
- The Dead
Musician Directory
- Provides cause of death, biographies, photos,
articles, links, and links to CDNow for musicians who have
died since 1997. Interesting information if you are into
musicians.
