The Jacks Cabin Water Tank was very unique to the D&RG, in that it was not
like all the bigger standard 50,000 gallon tanks on the line! As a matter of fact, it was quite small in capacity in
that it only held 9600 gallons of water! In addition, where all the other tanks were mainly of the 12 column variety,
this tank actually used bents to support the tank. This uniqueness in size and construction should make it a natural
for garden railroads. Built to a scale of 1:20.3, it is probably the perfect size for many existing garden railroads!
Larger than any plastic tank on the market today, but still towers above 1:20.3 locomotives without over powering your layout
like the other D&RG 50,000 gallon tanks can.
By moving the water level indicator to the left side of the tub and slightly changing the spout weight
boxes during construction, the model 0840 Jacks Cabin water tank can represent the Villa Grove water tank! Contact PCGRS
if you are interested in this configuration.
The model 0840 Jacks Cabin Single Spout Water Tank is designed and built to
faithfully represent an icon of narrow gauge railroading using proven construction techniques that were developed for the
Chama, Osier, and Los Pinos water tanks. The subroof is composed of solid structurally engineered redwood to which
one can choose to have a tar paper or optional cedar shingle roof applied. Either way, this is one roof that will not
sag or collapse under abuse!
The tub of the tank is built up from actual overlaping redwood staves, applied to a sub-structure
designed to make the tub crush-proof. Brass hoops and cast lugs complete the outer detail and are designed to stay
in place with expansion and contraction of the tub.
The base of the tank has the bents screwed and pinned to the floor beams. The PVC base represents
the concrete foundation that the tank was built on and protects the structure from ground water. The detachable ladder allows
the tank to be used and moved without worry of breakage. The result, is a water tank that looks great and is built to last.
The spout is handbuilt from brass and features a properly enclosed counterweighted chain and
pulley system that allow the spout to be positioned to your needs.
The water tank requires a space that is 16" wide by 12" deep. The overall height measures 20" tall.
We recommend that the front of the base be placed about 6" from the centerline of the track. The weight of the structure is
about five pounds! The tank can be obtained in our standard colors (link to Color Selection).
