Shortly after I left my tour of duty on the "Mac", I began construction of a scratch-built model of the McCandless as she appeared following our 1978 overhaul in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard.
The carving process, frustrating at times but satisfying in the end, took about a year. The finished product, displayed in the following photgraphs, is carved out
of a 4"x6" slab of cherry wood and is built at a scale of 1:192. The overall length of the finished model is about 27 inches. Model and photos by Bruce Sharpe.
