SIMPSON FAMILY
WALLER FAMILY

The Doss Family has strong roots in Halifax and Pittsylvania County, Virginia even though many of them later moved to West Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee with some moving on to California.  According to Doss family documents, in 1755 James Doss received a land grant for 272 acres in Halifax County, an area soon to become part of the newly created Pittsylvania County in 1767. This land grant was located adjacent to Beech Tree Creek and Staunton River.

There is a Doss Spring located on this track of land later purchased by U.B. Simpson in 1898 and is near Tater Hill on Dews Road.  In the early 1900's U.B. Simpson had a Ram (water pump) installed in the Doss Spring that supplied water to the Simpson household. Doss also received land grants as early as 1753 around Valentine Creek and Nixes Creek, which would be near the farms bordered by Easome Road, Wards Road and Dews Road. His neighbors were Thomas Dillard, Edward Dillard, Amos Richardson, William Owens and James Patey. Charles Doss had a land grant in 1767 for 400 acres on Stinking River and William Doss had 400 acres on Allen's Creek in 1771. Many of the Doss family are buried in the Doss cemetery and the New Bethel Methodist Church cemetery located on Dews Road.

The purpose of this web page is to share information.  Family trees like real trees start small and grow to be huge. That is the case here and the time and effort to keep updated is tremendous. The practice followed by most family trees is to only show early generations and that practice is being implemented here. The Big Family Tree expanded connections and updates will continue off web and if you have changes or corrections to these pages or would like to work on your interconnection you can still keep in touch using the contact information on this link. . .  http://mysite.verizon.net/bushwhak
