UNITED TRAIN OF ARTILLERY
FLAG
The
flag is a copy, not of the original Revolutionary War flag, but of another copy
painted circa 1826 by Mr. John R. Penniman of Boston, MA. Though the motifs on
the flag are those commonly used in the War for Independence and throughout the
state's history, and the Penniman flag appears to be a copy of an earlier
original, we do not know precisely what the original flag looked like. The 1775
flag, to our knowledge, did not survive. The 1826 flag is a part of the
collection of the RI Historical Society. As we were unable to access the
original flag, we were forced to replicate it from an 8 x 10 photograph of the
1826 flag. We matched the original 1826 dimensions, materials and details using
the description in "Standards and Colors of the American Revolution."
The flag is handpainted by Joe Giammarco on both sides on yellow silk. The
stars, are sewn on as were the originals.
