UNITED TRAIN OF ARTILLERY
HELMET
The
UTA helmet is an exact replica of the original helmet worn by the
UTA during the early days of the American Revolution. An original helmet found
on the Battlefield on Long Island, is currently on display in the Varnum
Continentals Armory in East Greenwich, RI.
The loan of this helmet by the Varmun Continentals allowed the UTA to
reproduce the design, shape and coloring of the helmet.
The
entire helmet is made of black leather and has a front shield that is
hand-painted. The shield is in the shape of a wave cresting
to the left with an anchor painted in the middle. The hat is in the shape of a
liberty cap. The
motto, “For Our Country” rides the crest of the wave, while “In te Domine
Speramus” (In God We Hope) is
below the anchor. This was the state’s motto during the colonial period.
At the center of the
helmet’s crown is a tuft of red and gold thread symbolizing the fuse of an
artillery bomb. An artillery bomb is also painted on the back of the helmet
headband.
