    In March of 2002, I had the pleasure of performing the world premiere of Andrew Downes' Symphony No. 5 for Flute Orchestra in Birmingham, England, under the direction of Carol Kniebusch Noe. Not only was the music brilliant, but Mrs. Noe was an extraordinary conductor bringing out the best in each performer. Her rehearsal style captured the essence of what the composer had in mind and helped all the players to not only understand it themselves but also play in such a way as to make it come across to the audience. It was truly an incredible musical experience for players and listeners alike.

    In 1998, Carol Kniebusch Noe worked with Rose City Flute Choir as guest conductor of a program featuring Sonata for Eight Flutes by Andrew Downes. She is a masterful conductor and astute in assessing a group's strengths and weaknesses which enables her to put the finishing touches on a program and produce a polished performance. We hope to have Carol back to work with our group in the near future.

      Carol Kniebusch Noe has visited Birmingham, England on three occasions during the last few years, to conduct the Birmingham Flute Ensemble, a professional group, in performances at Flute Days organized by the Birmingham Flute Commission. Her thorough knowledge of the score and careful, detailed rehearsal of difficult passages, combined with the clarity of communication through the baton with her players (especially under the pressure of performance) has earned both respect and affection from those who have played for her in Birmingham. We hope to continue our association with her on future occasions.
