Welcome

We at Carter Memorial United Methodist Church are delighted to have you visit us on the Web and are eager to meet you at church.  We are a large church of people of many occupations throughout the Boston area.  We worship on Sundays at 10:15 a.m.  in a beautiful “traditional New England” sanctuary.  Our choir is known throughout the region for its excellence.  Their repertoire is widely diverse from the classics to spirituals to contemporary sacred music.  I preach from the Bible seeking to make the Good News relevant to our modern lives.  The Gospel sends us into the world with an active mission program and social justice advocacy.

For Job Seekers:

We meet at noon on Mondays in Cramer Parlor. Bring a bag lunch (beverages provided) to network, share, and reflect on the spiritual dimensions of going through the job search process.  Anyone is welcome.

We have programs “from womb to tomb” all during the year.  I teach pre-baptismal classes for parents wishing to present children for baptism and for adults wishing to join the church.  Christian education is important to us so we have Sunday school for 3 year olds through adults (with choices!)  We provide child care during Sunday school and worship for little ones and we have a special family room for families who wish to worship with small children.  Elementary children are urged to worship in our child-friendly church.  There is a special time for them in worship every Sunday.  We have an active youth program for 6-12th graders. Youth confirmation classes occur periodically Our Senior ministries provide social and spiritual activities for those over 65.    We celebrate Holy Communion monthly and at festival times.  We follow the Christian year with major festival services at Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost.

Whatever your theological persuasion, you would find a spiritual friend here who would “talk your language.” Come tell us your needs and we will assist in meeting them.
 Eager to meet you,
Pastor Caroline B. Edge

The Congregation...

Although there were Methodists in Needham by 1792, our congregation was created by Methodist knitters who emigrated from England in the 1850’s.  The congregation was chartered in April, 1867.  The first building was built in 1876 on our present site.  Two more additions and major renovations have resulted in a large building with a sanctuary that seats 400 and many classrooms.  We presently host the Carter Nursery School and the Carter Center for Children, a day-care center.  Our building is also a community center for many activities – men’s choirs, two AA groups, a square dance group, guiding dogs group, groups from Needham High School, Boy Scouts, etc.  Hundreds of persons are in our building daily year round!

One of the blessings of our church is the entryway “Door of Discipleship”.  Etched on the door are the symbols of Jesus’ Disciples.  We are reminded as we enter that we are invited by Christ to follow him and as we leave that we go out into the world as the representatives of Christ.
