Household Hazardous Waste Collection


The District's HHW collection event will be held in Carrollton this year:

Saturday, September 19, 2009, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Carroll County Fairgrounds
SR 9, Carrollton

This collection is available ONLY to residents of Carroll, Columbiana, and Harrison counties - proper identification is required.
Materials from businesses and institutions WILL NOT be accepted


Heritage WTI with be having a collection in Lisbon on September 12, 2009 from 9:00 am until 12:00 noon. The Lisbon collection will be held at the Courthouse parking lot, 105 South Market Street.

The following materials will be accepted at the Carrollton collection at no cost to District residents:

Solvent-based paints (latex paints will NOT be accepted)
Thinners, primers, stains, sealers
Varnishes, shellacs and polyurethanes
Paint related and pesticide aerosols
Pesticide liquids and solids
Cleaners (acids/bases/oxidizers) and reactives
Adhesives/roof tar/driveway sealers
Antifreeze and gasoline/kerosene
Automobile fluids/grease
Mercury - elemental/solids/liquids
Propane cylinders (small and large)

If you have any items that are not listed above, you will have to pay to recycle them based on a price negotiated between you and the HHW contractor!


Latex Paint, Oil, Lead-acid batteries and empty paint cans WILL NOT be accepted.

Miscellaneous information:

* Containers larger than 5 gallons will NOT be accepted

* Make sure that all containers are sealed tightly

* All products MUST be labeled

* DO NOT mix materials together

* Transport materials in sturdy containers using newspaper and/or cat litter as a liner

* If one or more of your containers are leaking or contaminated on the outside, wrap the
container(s) in plastic and place the wrapped container(s) in a separate container with newspaper and/or cat litter.

* For your safety, DO NOT eat drink or smoke when handling HHW materials and drive carefully when transporting HHW materials in your car or truck.


Alternatives:
Did you wish you didn't have to use your Saturday to come recycle hazardous materials you found in your garage or basement? Would you like to reduce the amount of HHW you have around your house? If you answered "yes", try these less-toxic alternative cleaning products (courtesy of Dover, NH Community Services). Not only are they environmentally-friendly and work as well as the "chemical products", but in most cases they are cheaper, too.
