Where can I recycle.......

Do you have a material to recycle that is not accepted at one of the District's drop-off sites? There are several locations that accept other types of recyclable materials. Just find the material on the list below and follow the link to the recycling facility:

Christmas trees
The District recommends reusing your live Christmas tree for an animal habitat; all you need to do is set your old tree out back. The District also has a Christmas tree recycling program that runs from December 27 to January 31 of each year.

Pallets
The Ohio EPA Office of Pollution Prevention has a state-wide list of pallet recycling facilities.

Cardboard

Foam Peanuts
Most stores that provide UPS/FedEx shipping services will be happy to take your foam peanuts; call before you go to be certain that they will accept them. Listed below are known locations that accept peanuts from consumers:

Foam egg cartons
The National Polystyrene Recycling Company accepts foam egg cartons for recycling. U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail costs about $4.00 to ship two pounds anywhere in the U.S (parcel post will be cheaper; go to USPS.com to calculate shipping costs). This is an ideal way to recycle PS foam because of the low density. It has been estimated that 40 egg cartons (the average annual generation of egg cartons) weigh less than 1.5 pounds.

Household Hazardous Waste
The best way to recycle HHW is to use all non-hazardous materials whenever possible. Dover, NH Community Services has a comprehensive list of environmentally-friendly alternatives to HHW. Not only do they work as well as the "chemical products", but in most cases they are cheaper, too.

If you must use a hazardous material, only buy what you need and use it all up if possible. Don't buy the 5-gallon size if all you need is a half-gallon, even if the 5-gallon size is "a better deal". If you have household hazardous wastes to dispose of, please bring them to the District's HHW collection events. The District's events are usually held in the fall; check the District's home page in the fall for more information.

Wood Waste
If your business generates a quantity of woody wastes that can not be disposed on-site, call Columbiana County Wood waste Recycling or Wood Waste Recycling in Pennsylvania.

Paint
When buying paint, choose latex-based paints instead of oil-based. Latex paints clean up with water, which eliminates the need for thinner (a hazardous material). Only buy what you need (e.g., quarts instead of gallons). If you have any paint left over, donate it to a community organization, theater groups, schools or you neighbor. Small amounts of left-over paint can be dried up and the can disposed at the Scrap Metal recyclers listed below. Latex paint is not hazardous. If you have a lot of latex paint and are unable to donate it, pour cat litter (or other absorbent) into the paint can. Once all the paint has been absorbed, place the paint can/cat litter into your garbage can. See the Latex page for more information.

Antifreeze
Unfortunately, there are no facilities that recycle antifreeze within the District boundaries. However, most Valvoline Instant Oil Change and Pep Boys locations recycle antifreeze. There are Valvoline Instant Oil Change and Pep Boys stores in Mahoning and Stark counties. Please recycle your old antifreeze at one of these locations. (Or bring it to the District's next HHW collection - keep checking the main page for updates.)

Tires
There are 2 facilities in Columbiana County that accept tires for recycling:

There is a tire monofill near the District that accept tires; this is not a recycling facility, but rather a specialized disposal facility that only accepts tires.

Old Propane Tanks
Do you have an old-style propane tank (with a non-OPD valve)? Did you know that you can not always trade them in for a new tank and it is illegal to dispose of them in landfills? There are outlets for these type of tanks:

Computers and Electronics
Go Surplus (330-596-2613) in Salem accepts Computers, TVs and other electronics.
