The English Origins of Henry Doude of Guilford, Connecticut
Henry Doude left Kent, England during the “Great Migration” in 1639. He was one of the signers of the “Plantation Covenant”, an agreement made between the Puritan founders and settlers of Guilford, Connecticut. We would like to expand, clarify, and correct what is known about the English Origins of Henry Doude.
Researcher Robert Chown, of Kent, was able to copy some
documents, get wills transcribed, and, with his vast knowledge of the Kent records,
was able to locate previously unpublished records. Kathy Peterson also located some key parish records.
Henrie Dowde married Christian (maiden name unknown) at
Woodchurch, Kent on October 11, 1609.
These were the parents of the immigrant, Henry Doude. Christian was the widow of a Cruttenden (no
known relationship, as of yet, to the Guilford settler Abraham Cruttenden or to
William Chittenden). Henry (Jr., the
immigrant) had at least two siblings by this marriage baptized at Woodchurch,
Richard on 15 July 1610 and Thomas on 22 Jan 1614/15 (Thomas buried at
Woodchurch 11 May 1664 – had a wife, Anne -, and daughters Anne and Mary). Christian () Dowde was buried at Woodchurch
on 15 Jan 1620/21. Henry Jr. had at
least one more half-sibling, sister Mary (baptized at Woodchurch 4 May 1628,
buried 26 April 1642), from his father’s second marriage to Elizabeth
Woollett. This Elizabeth Woollett has
been mistakenly published in family trees all over the internet as the wife of
Henry Doude the immigrant. She was his
stepmother. Henry may have had a few
more half-siblings from his mother’s previous marriage to a Cruttenden. Henry Sr. was born some time around 1583
(from his reported age at his marriage to Elizabeth Woollett), and was buried
at Woodchurch 26 Dec 1638, as was his widow Elizabeth a few months later. Note: these burials occurred, probably not
coincidentally, only months before Henry Jr. and family left for New England.
Henry Doude Jr., now of nearby Tenterden, Kent, was married to Elizabeth Dadson, of Maidstone, Kent on May 12, 1635 at Langley, Kent. They had obtained a marriage license at Canterbury 10 days previously, on May 2, 1635. Henry signed the license document, and Elizabeth Dadson’s father, Ambrose Dadson, signed with his mark.

It is not yet known in which parish they resided between
the dates of their marriage and of their departure to New England in 1639. We hope, eventually, to locate the
christening records of two of their daughters, Elizabeth and Mary. We now know that these two children of Henry
Jr. and Elizabeth were born in England because Elizabeth’s father, Ambrose
Dadson, of Maidstone, Kent, left a will dated March 14, 1639/40 (probated April
8, 1640) naming these two grandchildren, among others:
“… and to
my Sonne in Law henry Dowd and my daughter Elizabeth the wife of the said henry
and to my grandchildren Elizabeth Dowd and Mary Dowd twelve pence a peece to
each of them of lawfull English money.”
Ambrose
Dadson was buried at Maidstone on March 19, 1639/40, only five days after
making his will. This document would
also seem to narrow the birth dates of some of the other children of Henry and
Elizabeth to the 1640’s at Guilford, Connecticut, where we are lacking birth
records.
Ambrose
also named his wife, Ellen, who was probably the mother of Elizabeth, but no
marriage record has yet been located.
Siblings of Elizabeth Dadson were Alice (m. Barnabas French), William
(m. Jane Hope), and Ann (m. John Effeild).
It is interesting to note that Ann married John Effeild on the same day,
at the same place, that Henry married Elizabeth. On their respective licenses, John Effeild was bondsman for
Henry’s marriage, and Henry was bondsman for John Effeild’s marriage. Why did these two couples marry at Langley,
as opposed to Maidstone? Perhaps it was
because Freegift Tylden was the Rector at Langley –
Robert Chown noted that his 1659 will described himself not as Rector of Langley but 'Preacher
of the Word of God', clearly a Puritan. Ann and John made their residence at Bearsted, Kent. They had three children, and Ann probably
died before January 16, 1639/40, when John was married to Amy Austen at
Bearsted.
We are
also fortunate that the father of Ambrose Dadson, William Dadson, also left a
will, dated November 20, 1623, with many names. He named wife Elizabeth, probably the mother of Ambrose, but not
certain as no marriage record has yet been located. Siblings of Ambrose Dadson were Thomas, Edward, John, and
Dorothie (m. John Dann). The following is a summary of the Dowde and
Dadson families. The tree chart is a pdf file.

Y-Chromosome genealogy-dna tests have been completed for individuals descended from two different sons of Henry Doude (Thomas and John). The near-match results for these descendants confirm the documented genealogies. Compared to tens of thousands of results for other individuals, the haplotype (or dna signature) for Henry is, so far, similar to that of only one other family. The results also show no relationship to the Irish Dowds, indicating instead a probable continental origin for the ancient paternal ancestors of Henry.
