After three seasons out of the Texas League, there was a push to bring professional baseball back to San Antonio, the third largest city in Texas. When they returned in 1968, they came to V.J. Keefe Stadium on the campus of St. Mary’s University, which had been built for the college baseball team in 1958 and got significant upgrades to accommodate pro ball.
Fans enter the upper deck from the wings, while they can access the lower deck from the main stadium entrance behind home plate. The seats are pitched fairly high, bringing fans sitting in the upper deck closer to the game.
The Missions moved to the new Municipal Stadium in 1994. That season, the Texas-Louisiana League, a new independent loop, tried placing a team at Keefe, but the Tejanos folded after just one year.
Today, the field continues to be used by the university, whose baseball team won the NCAA Division II championship in 2001. The field is also used by amateur and travel ball teams.
