Since gaining the New York Mets’ Triple-A club in 1969, the Tidewater Tides had played at Norfolk’s Met Park – named not for the parent club but (like the Mets) as a shortened version of “Metropolitan”.

When it came time to upgrade, the Tides got a gleaming new facility right along the Elizabeth River, where if the game gets boring, the fans can watch the shipping traffic go by as well as take a look at what new construction and repair are on dry dock.

The park features a split upper deck, with press boxes and sky boxes taking the place of the upper deck behind the plate. The design works quite well, and the location fits Norfolk perfectly.

In a five-team affiliation swap, the Tides became a Baltimore Orioles affiliate in 2007.
