A friend of mine from Brooklyn always raved about Reading’s ballpark, calling it his favorite place to watch baseball (aside from Yankee Stadium). I first visited in 1992, and I’ve really warmed up to it since – even though it acquired a corporate name, GPU Stadium, in 2000 (it became FirstEnergy Stadium for 2002).

The park, erected in 1950, is the oldest in the Eastern League, and there are places where it shows, such as the narrow concourse. But this is offset by some recent renovations that make Reading a wonderful place to sit back and enjoy a game.

All the seating in the park is no more than 15 years old, and the seating capacity has been expanded in recent years by additions in left field as well as a BOB-style swimming pool beyond the right-field wall.

The best part of the stadium, however, is a staff that makes everyone feel at home. From public address announcer Dave “Frenchy” Bauman to the ticket takers, ushers, and concessionaires, Reading is a wonderful place.

The club has also bent over backwards to keep the experience affordable. General admission tickets are still $6 (and on weekdays, that includes quite a few seats under the spacious roof), and the Berks hot dogs, the best in the league, are only $1.50 each. They finally had to raise the price from $1, but the concessions are still very reasonable.
