| Here's our current seedling
selection. Most are seed propagated. Many are several
years out of flask, and some have even bloomed. Please check out
the description to get a better idea of plant size and maturity. Photos,
whenever possible, are of a parent I used in the cross. |

Solenangis aphylla- Easy
to grow leafless from Madagascar. Here's one not often seen.
The flowers are small 3 mm white and deep red. It's
grown more for it's foliage, or lack thereof. Unlike many leafless
varieties that grow roots out from a central crown, this species creeps
along alternately sending roots out the sides of the stem. It always
grows straight up, so should be mounted with plenty of room above. Seems
to do well in moderate to bright light, intermediate to warm temps. Mounted
divisions. Temporarily sold out. |
|
Comparettia macroplectron-
Pink flowers on branching stem on each new growth. This 'twig
ephite' likes plenty of air movement, and won't tolerate standing water.
They like to grow mounted and dry after each watering. These came
out of flask in summer of '05. They can possibly bloom on this
current (single) growth, but should certainly bloom on the next. Mounted.
$10 |
| Leptodes bicolor- A year
or so out of flask, the first of these is just now in bud. One
parent is AM/AOS. Potted or mounted. $15 |
|
|
Dendrobium lawesii- Pendant
growth habit with clusters of blooms several times per year. Not
sure what color these will bloom out, as they are crosses from multi-colored
parents- red, white/pink, orange/yellow, red/purple are in the background.
Like to grow moist. Deflasked summer '05. $10 Temporarily sold out. |
|
Dendrobium miyakii- Stake them,
or let them grow semi pendant, you will be rewarded with clusters of
deep pink/ purple blooms several times a year. Deflasked Fall '04,
these have 2-3 pseudobulbs, and are just approaching blooming size. $10
|
| Pleurothallis grobyi- A charming
easy to grow mini! These form small clumps and send the flowers
on spikes well above the leaves. I've grown these in fairly
bright light, so they are quite short, but are blooming size- some
have bloomed for several years now. Potted. $10 |
|
| Cadetia taylori- Mini with
white blooms. Several years out of flask, the first one just
bloomed June '06. Nice little clumps. $10 |
|
|
Mystacidium brabonae- Nice
mini with interesting roots, and nice sprays of flowers. This
species sends roots everywhere, on and off the mount. They bloom
at a small size, and tend to send multiple spikes, each with many small
white blooms. These are a year or so out of flask, and are approaching
blooming size. Mounted. $10 |
|
Aerangis punctata- Awesome
mini! Having a mature leaf span of only 1 to 2 inches, this
is truly a mini- mini. The starry cream white blooms dwarf the plant,
being an inch wide, and 3 inches long including the spur. Several
years out of flask, should be approaching blooming size. Potted.
$10 |
|
Aerangis citrata- Mini plant
with sprays of white fragrant flowers. These like to grow moist,
and have finer roots than many other aerangis. I grow them potted
in moss. Deflasked Spring '05, probably another year or so to
bloom. $10 Temporarily sold out. |
| Encyclia mariae- Small species
which grows nicely mounted. Leaves about 5 inches tall, on small
p-bulbs. Blooms white and green with huge lip. Small potted
seedlings deflasked Spring '05. $10 |
|
|
Comparettia falcata- Another
twig epiphyte. Grown mounted, provided good air movement, and
allowed to dry between waterings, this species has mice deep pink to
purple flowers. Not as showy or as large as the macroplectron
species, but still a nice addition. Deflasked Summer '05. May
bloom on the current (single) growth, but for sure on the next growth.
Temporarily sold out. |
|
Dendrobium lichenastrum Variety
prenticei, or just plain Den. prenticei- Lovely mini with small
but fragrant blooms. The cylindrical leaves on this species grow
to about an inch long. The creeping habit will cover a mount in time.
Likes fairly low to moderate light, and doesn't want to dry out too
much. May be grown mounted or potted. Blooming size or previously
bloomed. Potted $15 |
| Laelia pumila X Laelia dayana-
Ok, so we need at least one hybrid here... Several years out of flask,
multiple growths, 2 1/2 inch pot. Both awarded parrents (Black
Diamond, Hartford) First one bloomed on last growth- nice, so these are
real close to blooming size. $10 |
|
|
Sophronitis cernua- Mini species
that blooms several times a year with multiple bright orange flowers.
May be grown potted or mounted- some plants naturally tend to
stay in the pots, while others send many roots out. Will easily attach
to a cork mount. Deflasked Spring '05 the first several just bloomed.
Potted $10 |
| Cattleya leuteola- A small
Cattleya species with greenish yellow flowers. Likes a slight winter
rest, but plenty of water in summer. Deflasked Fall '04 not quite
blooming size $10. |
|
|
Mediocalcar decorata- Creeping
mounds of tiny foliage adorned with orange and yellow globular flowers
several times a year. I often hear that this species likes cool
moist conditions. I ignore that. I find these grow best
when potted in moss, watered heavily, drained, and allowed to dry until
the leaves just start to dehydrate, then watered again. I grow
them in shallow plastic cups without drainage. To water, I dunk
them in a bucket, then tip on the side to drain. Light should be
fairly high to promote dense growth, but direct sun will burn. Blooming
size Divisions $10. |
|
Mediocalcar bifolium- Larger
plant than decorata blooms are red and white. Creeps along and
forms a bushy clump. I grow potted in moss same as decorata. Potted
Divisions $10. Temporarily sold out. |
|
Dendrobium aphyllum- Pendant
growth with pink/ yellow blooms on end 1/3 of canes. This species
likes plenty of water in the summer growth season, but then should dry
out somewhat over the winter. Around Christmas, buds will appear.
They like to be under potted, and can grow for years in a 3 inch
pot. Canes reach 2-3 feet in length, and make a very attractive cascade
effect when in bloom. Several bloomed this year, so expect blooms
on next year's growth. $10 |
|
Dendrobium loddigesii- This
small species has canes only 6 inches long, but kiekies freely and forms
a specimen sized plant quickly. These like plenty of water in
the Summer, but need a cool, drier winter rest to bloom. When they
bloom in Spring, they can be covered with pink/ yellow flowers. Deflasked
Winter '04, small seedlings $5 |
| Dendrobium obtusipetalum- Orange/
Yellow candy corn like blooms on thin canes. Seem to like plenty
of moisture/ humidity throughout the year. Plants are now about
6-8 inches tall with multiple growths. Temporarily sold out. |
|
|
Den unicum- Neat miniature
with outrageous orange/ white blooms. Flower when quite small,
and stay fairly small, reaching 8 to 10 inches height. Need bright
light when canes mature, and a slight cutback on water. Most leaves
will drop, then buds form in mid winter. May bloom several times
a year. Fragrant along the lines of citrus or peaches. Very near
blooming size, some already bloomed $10. Temporarily sold out. |
|
Dendrobium rigidum- Nice highly
day fragrant mini species. Will grow mounted or in small pots
and blooms several times a year. Needs good air movement and to
dry between waterings. Very near blooming size- many already bloomed.
Potted $10 |
| Oncidium papilio- deflasked
'03 several years to blooming size $10 |
|
| Dendrobium teretifolium- 'Bridal
vale' orchid. This Australian species grows pendant thin cylindrical
leaves and blooms with sprays of fine white flowers. Deflasked
Winter '03. Plants have several growths ranging 3-5 inches long.
$10 We also have some mounted ones available, but they are not growing as well in our conditions- leaves only 2-3 inches long on 3 inch cedar shim mount $5 |
|
|
Ascocentrum ampullaceum- These
seedlings result from the cross of the standard pink form of ampullaceum
with the orange moulienense form. Not sure what color they will
bloom, but some are just starting to spike, so we should know soon enough!
This species blooms small, and never gets that large. The
pink parent plant normally throws 6 to 12 spikes and it's less than a
foot tall. It blooms from the same nodes year after year as well
as new locations up higher, and kiekies from the base. Blooming
size $10 |
| Dendrobium ellipsophyllum AKA revolutum-
From S.E. Asia, this species likes plenty of water in the summer,
but a drier winter rest, and bright light. Multiple growths, tallest
about 6 inches tall. Temporarily sold out. |
|
|
Aerangis mystacidii- Neat mini
having starry white blooms. These will grow well mounted on cork,
or may be left potted. Like plenty of moisture. Deflasked Winter
'04 nearing blooming size, maybe another year or so. $10 |
|
Laelia purpurata Var. carnea- Established
seedlings with several growths, about 4 inches tall. I'll guess 3-4
years until blooming size. $10 |
