Hi, my name is Carmaletta Harris Gates, but most people call me Carrie.  I was born in Sylva, North Carolina in 1953. I grew up at Wolf Creek in the Canada Community of Jackson County.  I have one brother, Billy, my dad was John Lee, and my mom is Reba Harris.  I lived in the Canada Community for the first forty years of my life.
 
I am a mountain storyteller and often tell stories at Mountain Heritage Day the last Saturday of September at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC. I am the author of Granny Tales: North Carolina Mountain Tales, a collection of local stories and poems.If you'd like to see my book click on the book image, then scroll to the bottom of the page.
 
I currently live in Dillsboro, NC, with my husband, David Gates, and youngest daughter, Ashley Gates.  My middle daughter, Sarah Moses, is currently in Las Vegas, Nevada. she works as a rigger for the "O" show by Cirque du Soliet.
 
Carolyne finshed Western Carolina University with a BS degree in sociology, she currently works as a job coach for Webster Enterprises. Sarah has a MFA degree  in technical theatre from the University of Arizona, and Ashley just completed the seventh grade at Fairview Elementary School.  I just completed my doctoral studies and dissertation in Adult and Higher Education for an EDD degree from NC State University in Raleigh.
 
My husband David is a licensed building contractor in North Carolina, in fact the first blind individual to pass the test. He currently builds, remodels, and renovates houses.
 
David, and I own Bradley's General Store (www.bradleysgeneralstore.com) in Dillsboro, NC. Bradley's is an old time general store with a real soda fountain. We sell all kinds of products, focusing on retro lines. Bradley's is located directly across from the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad.
