On the inside of the front binder is written in black ink, Elizabeth G Cooks, and underneath written in pencil is mrs Patten Died may the 3 and was buried may the 6 1896. On the inside of the back binder written in pencil is Elizabeth Cook her Book. On the last page in the Bible there is a small newspaper clipping sewn to the page, which reads:From the inscriptions on the inside binders and from the newspaper clipping sewn to the back page it would appear that this Bible belonged to Elizabeth Cook, born 4 July 1831, died 1 Nov 1904, the daughter of Joseph Cook and Elizabeth Applegate. She married 25 Dec 1850, James Henry Stillwell the son of Jeremiah Stillwell and Ann Boud. It is interesting to note that there are entries for her great-grandparents Joseph and Sarah (Green) Cook and their children, for her grandparents Green and Rhoda (Harker) Cook and their children, and entries for all of her children (Britton Cook Stillwell through Julia Lynn Stillwell), but there is no entry for herself or her siblings, with the exception of the smudged pencil entry for her older sister Matilda Cook.
By the same, on the 25th ult,, at 7.P.M., Mr. James
Henry Stillwell, to Miss Elizabeth Cook, all of
Monmouth county. It appears that this Bible originally belonged to someone else and then was passed down to Elizabeth. The Bible has a date of 1812, 19 years before Elizabeth Cook was born, and the original Cook family entries are in a distinctly different handwriting style. Another indicating factor is that the last entry for the Earl family is Gilberthorp Earl born 1812, even though additional children were born to this family[1]. This leads me to conclude that the early Cook and Earl family entries were entered at the same time, probably shortly after the Bible was purchased. The death entries for James Cook died 1816, Silas Cook died 1817, and Green Cook died 1832 also appear to be in the earlier handwriting style.
