from Callot: Balli di Sfessania

Kirkpatrick numbers are misleading.  They should be replaced by primary source volume and contents numbers.  These are the equivalent of the opus numbers of other composers.  Thus Essercizi is Scarlatti's opus "0" and Parma libri 1-15 his opus "1" through "15", each containing 30 or more pieces; together they account for 493 of the sonatas. They are likely to be Scarlatti's own decision how his sonatas should be ordered; he certainly knew about them if nothing else. The other primary sources supplement those two with duplicates, different versions, or works omitted from them.  See the Collections file for complete lists of the primary source contents.

There are 58 sonatas in the above list which have no Kirkpatrick numbers. Almost all were attributed to Domenico Scarlatti in the 18th century; whether or not they are all authentic works by him is beside the point; the Kirkpatrick catalogue is inadequate.

Calendar

The two largest collections of Scarlatti manuscript sources, at the Biblioteca Palatina, Parma, and the Biblioteca Marciana, Venezia, each contain more than 12 libri with 30 sonatas (or more) in each libro.  See the Capriccio file for connections I have made between several sonatas and the calendar dates which correspond to their position in these sources. The calendar below shows the advantage of using Scarlatti's original numbers in the Parma and Venezia libri over the meaningless Kirkpatrick numbers. Players and listeners can  pick a different sonata daily or adopt a sonata corresponding to their birthday and other important events in their lives.  For most dates there are two different sonatas to choose from.  Since most recordings are still listed by Kirkpatrick number, that is included as well.  In the table below, the Venezia numbers are followed by their Parma primary source numbers for reference to the fuller information given about each sonata in the Catalogue pdf file.
