All Baptized Christians are invited to receive communion at the Holy Eucharist. This includes children from the date of their Baptism. It is not necessary for a child to wait until Confirmation to receive communion. There is no set age for "first communion" in the Episcopal Church today. jesus is present for all who receive the Eucharist, and little children often have an awareness of God's presence that is fed and nutured through regular participation in Holy Communion.

Young children receiving Communion will be assisted by parents.

  • Actually show your child how to hold their hands to receive communion. In the Episcopal Church today, it is the usual practice to place the consecrated wafer or bread in the palm of one hand, with the other hand being held beneath. The person receiving the wafer or host then places it directly into his/her own mouth. The wine is taken directly from the chalice. Some may wish to dip the host in the wine.
  • It is perfectly fine for children who do not like the wine to pass receiving it.
  • If your child is not to receive communion, please have them come to the altar to receive a blessing. They can be shown how to criss-cross thier arms over their chest as a sigh that they are not receiving the bread and wine.
