We
became active after our son, an honor student and Boy Scout was expelled and brought before a judge for mistakenly leaving
his small pocketknife in his backpack at Los Cerritos Middle School. He was all of eleven at the time.
Although the case was dismissed, we were stunned
and disturbed by the district's behavior. The knife was discovered through a theft committed by two fellow students
who themselves were arrested several weeks later for stealing cellphones and other items from student's packs.
Instead of simply suspending our son and giving
him community service, the district chose the harshest punishment despite the fact that this was an innocent mistake and completely
accidental. After spending a small fortune protecting his record, we decided to transfer him to another district and
press for change in the CVUSD.
