CONFIGURATION

To use TalkingLogBook with the automatic frequency and mode features; you need to configure OmniRig/TalkingLogBook.  Detailed instructions are provided in the TalkingLogBook Help file in a section titled Configuration.

To Configure:
When the TalkingLogBook main screen loads, use the Settings menu on the program's toolbar.

1) Select Serial Communications Configuration
2) Select Rig - the radio you will use this with
3) Select Port - the PC COM/serial Port you want to use
4) Select Baud - the radio to PC communications speed; see the Help file
5) Select RTS Setting - see the Help file, this is radio dependent

You may not find your rig in the list provided in step 2.  If not, additional rig files are located in the folder RigIni (RigIni is located in the folder with TalkingLogBook).  Drag the rig file you need from this file to the OmniRig Rigs folder located in the "C:\Program Files\Afreet\OmniRig\" if you did not find an appropriate one with the basic install.
Consult the the main and OmniRig Help files for complete instructions.

For example:

For a Kenwood TS-2000, set the Rig to TS-2000 or Kenwood; the Port, to the serial port you use to connect to the radio; set Baud to 57600 (also set the baud on the radio-see the manual.  Both radio and TLB must be set to the identical value), Set RTS to Handshake.

For an ICOM IC-706MKIIG, set the Rig to IC-706MKIIG; the Port, to the serial port you use to connect to the radio; set Baud to 19200 (also set the baud on the radio-see the manual.  Both radio and TLB must be set to the identical value), Set RTS to Low. ICOM radios may also require changing settings on the radio.  These are discussed in the Help file

Features

  • Microsoft's artificial speech voice known as "Sam" reads the electronic logbook information on request. Other voices may be substituted. The easiest way to get additional voices is to download the free Microsoft SAPI 5.1 SDK.

  • TalkingLogBook reads the rig frequency and mode. A small "external" memory data base is provided to control simplex frequency input.

  • Voice commands can control basic radio functions and logbook entry and retrieval. You MUST have SAPI 5.1 to use this feature.

  • Audible cues, short-cut keys and voice commands may be used.

  • Key strokes are announced if the Audible Typing box is checked.

  • Current time and rig frequency announcements are available.

  • Logbooks may be queried in "standard" and "magnified" type fonts.

  • The program automatically recognizes, lists and announces previous contacts with a logged station when the call sign is entered into the STATION log field.

  • The program provides band and license restricted frequency limits cues.

  • Accesses the Radio Amateur Callbook if this callbook disk is available. TLB can vocalize the information.

  • A module converts ADIF files from other programs to import logbook information.

  • A module exports native TalkingLogBook files into ADIF format to export logbook information. This file can be used with the ARRL's LogBook of the World.

Who Can Use TalkingLogBook Effectively?

TalkingLogBook was initially designed for the visually impaired. Blind radio amateurs may find the program useful. Large standard fonts can be "magnified" for other users. The speech capability may be useful to either blind or visually impaired individuals.  Extensive menu driven functions were added in Version 1.04 to make it easier for blind individuals to navigate. Its ability to be controlled with voice commands may make it useful for individuals who are unable to use a PC keyboard.

TalkingLogBook was described in an article in the May/June 2006 QEX magazine.  A link follows.  Versions of the program that are described in the article are available at the Betas link shown below.
