Q: What is the policy for math tests and quizzes?

A:     There will be announced quizzes after each section in a chapter.  There will also be unannounced quizzes to reinforce the need to review and retain concepts.  Tests will be announced and given at appropriate times during the current unit of study.  All tests and quizzes must be done in pencil.

During tests and quizzes there will be absolute silence.  Anyone caught talking will have their tests taken and will receive a grade no higher than 85%.  Anyone caught cheating will receive a 0%.  There will be no warnings.  No student will be excused to get a drink or use the restroom during a test.  Upon completion of a test, students will check their work and then turn over their tests.  Students may then put their heads down and relax until the end of class.  They may not do anything else. At the end of class everyone will turn in their tests at the same time.

When tests are handed back, I will give the opportunity to add 5 percentage points to their final score by correcting the errors on their test.  The corrections are due the following morning.

Q: What is the policy for math homework?

A:     Math is a subject that requires practice, every night.  There will be days when we will be able to finish homework during class.  However, taking the book home every night and reviewing the day’s lesson is highly encouraged.  Homework is practice; therefore, I do not grade homework for correctness.  I do check to see if the homework was attempted using a reasonable effort.  All homework and class work must be done in pencil.

Q: What is the policy for absences?

A:
In the event of absences, students will have the same numbers of days to turn in make-up work as they were absent.  For example, if a student was out 3 days, they would have 3 days to complete make-up work when they return.  Please remember all missed homework will be given upon the students return to school.

If a test is scheduled before an absence, and no new material is covered, and the student returns in time for the test, they are required to take it.  If an absence is unexcused by the school, any work, quiz, or test will be recorded as a 0%.  If the absence is excused, the test will be given as soon as possible.

Q: What are the expectations for students in math class?

A:
During class I expect everyone to participate.  In my opinion, participation is more than just giving answers.  It’s also asking questions.  Asking a good question is sometimes better than giving five correct answers.  When someone is speaking, they deserve everyone’s attention.  I expect students to raise their hand to contribute to the class.

I expect each student to treat everyone with kindness and respect.  I expect good manners.

I expect everyone to make mistakes.  I expect the fear of making mistakes will not stop anyone from trying.

I demand accountability.  We are all created by God with free will and imperfections.  Everyone makes mistakes and bad choices.  The only way to grow is to accept your flaws and try to change them, not blame them on someone else.
