Recycle is introduced at the Mainstream level. The Callerlab definition is as follows:
| Starting formation - ocean wave only. The ends of the wave cross fold as the centers of the wave fold in behind the ends and follow them around, then face in to end as two facing couples. |
The diagram for Mainstream Recycle looks like this:

Facing and Mini-wave box Recycle
At Advanced, Recycle from facing couples and from mini-wave boxes is added to the list of starting formations for Recycle.
The definition for Facing and Mini-wave box Recycle is:
| Beaus 1/2 Box Circulate and Right-face U-Turn Back as Belles Left Dodge and Veer Left. |
The diagram for facing couple Recycle looks like this:

The diagram for mini-wave box Recycle looks like this:

This variation of Recycle may also be done from this formation:

At Challenge levels the ocean wave Recycle definition changes to this:
| Starting formation - ocean wave only. This is a 3 part call. The first part is - centers Fold and adjust to make a box. The second part is - Counter Rotate ¼. The third part is a Roll. |
The Challenge level diagram looks like this:

Single File Recycle
The standard definition is:
| From a Single Double Pass Thru. Centers act as Beaus while Ends act as Belles to do a facing Recycle (i.e., Centers Touch and Right-face U-Turn Back as Ends Veer Left to become the Ends of a R-H Wave). | |
A less wordy definition is:
| From a Single Double Pass Thru. All dancers Veer Left. Centers U-Turn Back. Trailers Press Left. Finishes in a right-hand wave. |

All 8 Recycle
The standard definition is:

This call is really 2 different Recycles. The inside wave dancers do a normal wave-type Recycle around the outside dancers. The outside dancers do a Box Recycle, moving into the center to form a wave.
2/3 Recycle
This call follows the definition for the first two parts of a wave Recycle.

Many dancers do this call by doing a Partner Hinge followed by a Circulate. This generally works until the caller wants the dancers to fractionalize the call. Then the first definition must be used.

Cross Cycle
The standard definition is:
| From a Two-Faced Line:
Centers Cross Fold and all adjust to a Box: Box Counter Rotate ¼; Roll. Ends in Facing Couples. Cross Cycle is done from two-faced lines and various 2x2 boxes.
This is a 3-part call. Callers often call 2/3 Cross Cycle. |
The diagram looks like this:

An Alternate Definition is:
| From an applicable 2x2 (e..g, Facing Couples or Mini-Wave Box): As one movement, (Facing or Box) Recycle & Slither.
Ends in a Two-Faced Line.
Or Bounce the centers. Box Counter Rotate ¼; Roll. Ends in Facing Couples. |
The diagram looks like this:

The diagrams from applicable 2x2 formations look like these:

Some callers don't like mini-wave boxes for this call. The Ceder Chest allows it.
Unused Recycles
It should be perfectly legal to call Recycle and Cross Cycle from one-faced lines. The definitions do not preclude this yet it is not done. The diagrams for one-faced Recycle and Cross Cycle look like these:
One-faced Recycle

One-faced Cross Cycle

Problem Areas
There are some who think that the 3rd part of Recycle should be ¼ In instead of Roll. The effect is the same for both of these, but ¼ In allows Recycle to be interrupted after the second part with another call and still allows the same effect as a Roll. For example, if Recycle is interrupted after the second part with Walk and Dodge, then the dancers cannot roll after the Interrupt. ¼ In allows the Roll movement without worrying about whether the inserted call allows a roll or not. This makes sense.
The first diagram below shows the interrupt using Roll. The second diagram shows the interrupt using ¼ In. The first diagram doesn't work and the second does.
The name Recycle is only valid from an ocean wave yet is often used in obvious box situations, i.e., columns.
Recycle from a box situation is called Box Recycle, Split Recycle or plain Recycle depending on the caller and the formation. It is left to the dancer to know which is appropriate. Why load up the dancer with potentially confusing or ambiguous verbage?
If Recycle is used with the Crazy concept from parallel waves it must be done as a Box Recycle per the Crazy definition.
Single File Recycle is not really a Recycle - it is another call with some similarity to a Recycle. It doesn't start with 2 dancers standing side-by-side like all the other Recycles.
A possible solution to this problem is to give new names to each of these calls to make them truly unambiguous.
Of course, there is a lot of choreography containing all these Recycles that is already written that would have to be modified. Additionally, all the various choreography programs would have to be modified. Both of these tasks are daunting and would be resisted by many.
