Vent Hose Recall
Both Nissan and Ford are issuing recalls for the fuel tank vent hose on '93-'98 MY(model year)
vans. The problem is that the hose develop cracks that allow them to leak fuel
vapors and/or fuel. Owners of the affected vehicles are supposed to receive notification
in the mail with the mailing campaign to begin sometime around Feb. 2001.
Broken Crankshaft Alert
There have been a number of instances where the crankshaft has broken
at the crankshaft pulley. This can be verified by looking through the
customer complaint database on the NHTSA web site. Supposedly, the
cause of the problem is an overtightening the accessory drive belt.
This is plausible since it is easy to overtighten the belt with the belt
adjustment mechanism. It is very expensive to repair a broken crankshaft
, so overtightening the belts should be avoided. Nissan has a revised
crankshaft design that should help eliminate this problem, but I don't
know if or when the new crankshaft design has been incorporated into the
newer vehicles.
