The Story Thereafter

We still love, and miss, Loverboy. He was a very special feline, unique among pets, and I believe we will always miss him. He loved us, and we loved him. He will not be forgotten. There have been times since that October day when he left for the Rainbow Bridge, especially at night, when I walked into a room and could swear that Loverboy was there.

I have been asked if we have acquired another cat since then. A few months after we lost Lover, the veterianarn office called and asked if we would take a Maine coon named Maxime. Her previous owners, who had her for a decade, decided they didn't want her anymore, and she was left at the vet's office. It came as a complete surprise to Maxime, and we did take her. I have no idea what she thought--- within a few days she was living with us, strangers to her, and never to see her previous people again. She was beautiful. She also didn't want to be with us. I tried to like her, and did what I could for her. I'll always remember she thanked me for helping her---I lifted her---onto the window ledge when she wanted to look outdoors. She made it clear that she wanted to get outside, and we were keeping her indoors. Unfortunately, after three weeks, she was able to get out the back door and we never saw her again. We have no idea what happened to her. I hope she survived and found a good home.

At the end of April 2003 there was a cat up for adoption at the Ocean City Humane Society. There was a nice article in the local newspaper about him. However that cat did not want to be adopted---I was told he didn't leave his container. I wasn't there---I expected to see that cat when they got home, and I stayed home to get the house ready for his arrival. There was a cat willing to be adopted.

His name is Pumpkin, and as his name suggests, he's an orange tabby. He's also fat--- too much good food, I trust. He's not a lap cat, he's too big for that. He sleeps wherever he wants, but he has yet to get up on my bed while I'm in it and stay there. He's seems as if he's afried of us---he seems to moves whenever there's a noise, and he knows there's no way we would ever harm him. He should know that by this time. One main difference between Pumpkin and his two predecessors, Loverboy and Maxime, is that Pumpkin is an indoor cat and he has no desire to go outside. We are grateful for that, as cats can be harmed if they go outdoors in any number of ways. He is adorable, and very petable.
