Terry Sanford Award for Creativity
The Commission on Instruction and Professional Development of the North Carolina Association
of Educators sponsors the annual competition for the Terry Sanford Award for Creativity in Teaching and Administration.
The Terry Sanford Award was created in1966 as a tribute to the former NC Governor for
the achievements of his administration in public education.
In 1982, the NCAE Board of Directors voted to direct the resources of the Terry Sanford
Award toward a significant educational issue of the public schools of this State, as identified by the resolutions adopted
at the annual NCAE Convention. To that end, the NCAE seeks entries in the Terry Sanford Competition which reflect creativity
and innovation in teaching and administration.
The NCAE IPD Commission set the theme for the 2000-2001 competition, "Literacy: Learning
for a Lifetime." In the fall, members of the IPD Commission, local affiliate presidents, and association representatives will
receive special information about the theme and the required format for entries representing local NCAE affiliates.
Local entries submitted for state competition must be postmarked not later than January
11, 2002.
The winner of the Terry Sanford Award receives a plaque and a $1000 US Savings Bond which
are presented at the NCAE Convention Awards Banquet each year. Finalists are also recognized and receive a $100 US Savings
Bond.
Questions regarding the competition should be directed to Kelvin Spragley, NCAE IPD Consultant,

Kay Trull Professional Educator Award
The NCAE Instruction and Professional Development Commission sponsors the biennial recognition
of an outstanding educator through the Kay Trull Professional Educator Award.
The award was established in 1998 as a tribute to Kay Trull, who was the first recipient
in February 1988. Kay Trull passed away in June 1998 after a long battle with cancer. She was an active NCAE member and a teacher advocate through various North Carolina
professional commissions and committees.
She was more than an outstanding classroom teacher. She promoted student success by modeling
best practices. She advocated for a strong school culture through proactive school-based decision-making, and extended the school culture into the political arena to make sure that new policy was student
and teacher friendly.
This award will be presented to an outstanding educator on a biennial cycle. All active
NCAE members are eligible for this award.
Nomination forms should be submitted to the NCAE President by December 15, 2002. The IPD
Commission will review nominations and present the Kay Trull Professional Educator Award
at the NCAE Awards Banquet in March2000.
Questions regarding this award should be directed to Angela Farthing, Manager of the NCAE Center for Teaching
and Learning, 1-800-662-7924, ext. 230. |
