November 2, 2009 Lunch Meeting

Program:

Members present:  Rand, Jim, Shelly, Steve, Ron, Dave, and Kirk

Guests: Cheryl Bates from the Community Foundation, and Barb Hauck, Warner Preservation Trust.

President Kirk called the meeting to order at 12:20 pm. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and Rand leading us in prayer.  We decided to have the business meeting first and then let Cheryl have the remaining time.

Kirk apologized for over-booking our speakers.  However, Barb Hauck agreed to come back next week for her presentation of the history of the Warner Theater and the book she wrote about it.

The Highway Clean-up scheduled for last Saturday had to be cancelled due to rain.  Since it’s getting so late in the season, we will postpone the cleanup until the spring.

Ron and Steve reported that they would be following up with Gary Astorino, Guidance Counselor at General McLane HS to identify the students and the chaperon who will be attending the World Affairs Council in Pittsburgh on Wednesday, November 18th.  Ron will make sure the money gets sent in on time.

Kirk asked member to follow-up and contact prospective new members.  He invited Craig Walker from Walker Brothers, Don Fuller from Keystone Rehabilitation, Barry and Cecil Plouse, from 78 Transportation and the jewelry store to become Rotarians.

Dave reminded us about the Paul Harris Recognition Dinner at his house on November 15th.  Please RSVP, and let him know what you’ll be bringing.

Kirk also asked Rand to ask Don Hoffman to come and speak in two weeks, on Nov 16th to tell us about how to bring our “stuff” to an auction house to be auctioned off.

Speaker/Presentation:

Cheryl Bates from the Community Foundation came in to talk to us about the Earned Income Tax Credit.  Basically, it was designed as a subsidy for wage earners who made under a certain amount of income to be reimbursed for the taxes they paid.

She also wanted to promote their Free Income Tax preparation at the YMCA in Edinboro for those who need the extra help.

Upcoming meetings:

Next week, Nov 9th we will have Barb Hauck, a Paul Harris Fellow come to speak to us about the history of the Warner Theater and the book she recently wrote.
