We tried something new this year--two weeks in a cabin in the woods on a small island in the middle of Lake Erie. Turned out to be just what the doctor ordered, even if the cabin
did get a little crowded when seven of us were jammed in there! Mary and her children Isaac and Iris joined us for the
first week, and Ben & Alyssa came in for a long weekend. We swam at the state park beach on the north side, hiked
the glacial grooves, the quarry and Horseshoe Lake, did the museum and shops, roasted S'mores and ate fish four different
times. While the smallmouth remained stubborn, the walleye began cooperating part way through the trip, and the yellow
perch, white perch, white bass, channel catfish, drum, gobies, bluegills, rock bass and you-name-it were always biting.
We brought back more than 12 quarts of frozen fillets for lots of good meals in the future! There were many secluded
and beautiful spots on the island, and lots of elbow room on Lake Erie. Waves topped out at four to five feet a couple
of days, but most of the time it was more comfortable navigating. Isaac was my first mate, and he rode the waves like
an old pirate. His first-ever walleye was the five-pounder you see pictured. Our two biggest walleyes were both
exactly 23-1/2 inches long and a solid five pounds apiece. Most of the 'eyes were 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 pounds--just the right
eating size!
