Well, friends, we found a wonderful new vacation spot this last August. Deep in the wilds of the
Upper Peninsula of Michigan lies a beautiful lake nestled just under the lip of the southern coast of Lake Superior.
Called Lake Independence, this body of pristine water is about 3 miles wide, east to west, and 1-1/2 miles across, from
north to south. The town of Big Bay, notorious for a famous bar room murder several decades ago (see the old movie,
"Anatomy of a Murder"), lies at the west end of the little lake and is also situated on the south shore of the Lake Superior
bay from which it takes its name. Squaw Beach gives townsfolk and vacationers direct access to the stunningly clear
waters of Lake Superior, and a nearby marina allows you to fish the big water for trout and salmon if your boat can handle
it. Alder Creek, the Yellow Dog River and several smaller streams--all trout habitat--run down to Lake Independence
from the Huron Mountains on the south, and the Iron River, another good trout stream, flows from the little lake into
Lake Superior. Is the fishing any good? Check out the pictures! We'll be going back.

| Mixed bag of jumbo perch, rock bass and small walleye was typical. All big game fish were released. |

A wolf pack roams the woods round about the lake. We heard them two nights in a row, just a few hundred feet from
the cabin. Made the hair stand up on the back of you neck. Truly "The Call of the Wild".

|
| Amy spent most of her time reading, though we boated and hiked together on several occasions. |

|
| Mark's Place from the water, showing private dock. |

|
| Five pound smallies nearly a daily experience (and all released). |
The people were friendly, the fishing was good, the scenery delightful, the pace pleasantly slow.
Just about ideal, I'd say. Next trip is scheduled for August '08! Ben & Alyssa will join us for part
of that time. Something for which to look forward.
