Suggested Needs For the Hospital
- Big, comfy cotton undies. Especially good if you wind up needing to wear
pads because you start your period, which happens often after surgery!
- Hair shampoo and conditioner
- A big plastic or wooden spoon.- You can wrap toilet paper around it to
use it for cleaning yourself.
- Don't worry about a night gown or robe. The hospital should provide gowns
large enough to suit you and they will work best with I.V. lines and tubes.
- Loose dress to wear home with no binding around the tummy area
- Slippers that slip on easily
- Chap stick or Vaseline for chapped lips
- Hair bands or clips if you have long hair
- Ear plugs for that noisy roommate and loud hospital noises
Optional
- Personal portable fan - many people find that after surgery they are extremely hot! I
had mine on constantly for the first 2 days post-op after my abdominoplasty.
- CD Player/Tape Recorder and music
- Magazine or book; book on tape
- Your own pillow - some people also like bringing a U shaped pillow to put under their
necks for extra support while sitting up in bed.
- Bariatric Bed: Some people have found they like the "bari bed". This is a
specially made bed for patients who have undergone bariatric surgery (what we had!). It
makes it easier for larger patients to get in and out of bed. Warning! Some people have
found the beds to be extremely uncomfortable and have switched back to regular beds and
others have found them to be wonderful!
