IT'S OVER! Chess players everywhere will be relieved to know that The Long National Nightmare has ended.
At 9:00 P.M. Eastern time this date, The Librarian made move number 36, checkmating his hapless opponent and mercifully ending the marathon chess game which has dragged on hopelessly for more than a decade. This was Game #5 in an ongoing series and it began innocently enough on February 9, 1985 with no indication that 4,315 days would pass before the life could be wrenched from the unnatural checkered monstrosity it would become. 11 years 9 months 24 days at an average of 3 moves per player per year. Who would have thought anyone had the strength, the fortitude to endure? Who would be willing to again face a chess board after such an ordeal? Game #6 is already under way.
