1893 Received degree of Doctor of Divinity conferred
         by Washington and Lee University.
1895 Appointed Grand Chaplain of Grand Lodge of
         of Virginia.
1901 August 22nd W. M. of Broadwater Lodge under
         dispensation.
1901 December 25th Appointed by MW R. O. Kerns 
         as first Wor. Master of Broadwater Lodge
         (to 6/30/1903)  
A petition presented in Northampton Masonic Lodge Number 234 by Worshipful Harry Buchanan on the 28th day of June 1901, requesting their recomendation for a dispensation to begin a new Masonic Lodge at Nassawadox Station, Virginia.  A vote resulted in favor of a new Lodge.  The secretary of Northampton Lodge Number 234, Brother R. L. Ailworth, was ordered to forward their request to the Grand Lodge of Virginia.
 

The first Communication of Broadwater Lodge was held under Dispensation on August 22, 1901 with the following officers:

On September 11, 1901 Wor. Master George H. Ray was appointed to frame a resolution of sympathy on the death of President William McKinley.
 
On December 5, 1901 Bro. George H. Ray was appointed Master of Broadwater Lodge by Most Worshipful H. O. Kerns, Grand Master of Masons in Virginia.
 
At a stated communication December 25, 1901, District Deputy Grand Master Henry L. Upshur organized Broadwater Lodge No. 71 and installed the following officers:

Most Worshipful Charles M. Lankford Worshipful Master of Broadwater Lodge No. 71 in 1926.  Grand Master of Masons in Virginia in 1952.  Most Wor. Lankford contributed much to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.  Route 13, which is the North South Highway for the Eastern Shore, is named Lankford Highway in his honor.
