Before the BBT was built, the link to the Eastern Shore of Virginia was by ferry which landed in Cape Charles.  Cape Charles was built as a terminus for the Chesapeake & Atlantic railroad in 1886 which is, at the present time, used for freight and terminates in Cape Charles at "Float Bridges" which are used to load freight cars onto "Car Floats" which are moved across the Chesapreke Bay by tug boats.
There is now a vintage excursion train using the tracks.  It is called "Bay Creek Railway".

The Eastern Shore of Virginia is the southern end of the "DELMARVA" peninsula it is bordered on the north by Pokomoke, Maryland and on the south by The Bay Bridge Tunnel.
