| 1985 Regular Season: Redskins (27) vs. Bengals (24) at R.F.K. |
| Quality: Good+ |
| This is really a great game, and a fantastic comeback by the Skins.
It's the next to last game of the year, and the Redskins are fighting for a playoff berth, as are the Bengals. Wyche's hurry-up offense, led by QB Boomer Esiason, gives the Skins fits early on, as the Bengals answer an early Redskins touchdown by carving out a 24-7 lead. It was about to be 31-7 in the second quarter when Curtis Jordan makes a potentially game-saving INT in the endzone to stop another Bengals drive, and this seems to wake the team up. The Bengals don't score again, but the Redskins, led by new QB Jay Schroeder, slowly work their way back in it, capped by a 34 yard TD burst by George Rogers. This game is also significant because it is the last game John Riggins ever played in RFK. Unfortunately, though, he never sees the field. He was offered the opportunity to start, but turned it down, saying he didn't want that kind of special treatment. When he is introduced to the crowd, everyone knows it's the end, and it's very touching seeing him wave to the crowd, blow kisses, and then make light of himself by clutching the old oxygen mask when he makes it to the sidelines. Anyway, the Bengals almost put together a field goal to send it into overtime, but Breech misses a long attempt as time runs out. |
