7-12-06New Tunes on MySpace! CD Now on I-Tunes!"One More Song (For the Ones Who Love You)" In case you don't know yet, I've moved shop over to MySpace, specifically at www.myspace.com/dissonline. I have two new songs up there as of this date, with more updates to come. The first is a fully-completed song called "One More Song (For the Ones Who Love You)", which you'll find on the main page of the MySpace site, along with, on my blog there, some more info about the the inspiration behind the song, lyrics, etc. The other is yet another Big Country cover, this one a b-side from the "Steeltown" era called "Belief in the Small Man." My lovely wife Joanie helped me with this one, providing beautiful co-lead vocals that really make the song sort of a lullaby, which is what I was going for. Also, you can now find the full Greenhorn CD available for download at I-Tunes. Just search for "Diss" as the artist name or "Greenhorn" as the CD name, and you'll find me. I should be available on a host of other digital distribution sites as well by the time you read this. Download the whole CD or just one track. Anyway, I won't be posting much on the blogspot site anymore, as MySpace is such a better interface, with blogging incorporated into it, so I hope you all won't mind signing up there to read my ramblings if you are interested. If not, I'll still be updating this main area of the site with condensed versions of the most important news. So, enjoy the new songs, let me know what you think, and, as always, stay safe, happy, and tuned! Diss
Brand New (as of 4/4/06)This is my completed version of this song, the demo of which was posted on my blog, where you'll also find lyrics and more info about this tune, so check it out. (http://dissmusic.blogspot.com).
NewISH Material Feather In My Hands - You may have heard another version of this before. It was on the CD "Gunnysack" under the band name The Dissidents. Well, I was never too pleased with how that one came out, and I wanted to "rescue" a few of the songs that I thought were worthy of rescuing. This is one of them. Basically, I changed the key entirely on this one to better suit my voice and did a few other arrangement changes, as well as instrumentation changes. I wouldn't say it's radically different, but it's quite noticeably different, that's for sure. I really love the guitar solo in this one, but I'll be the first to admit it's a complete Big Country ripoff. Still, it works, don't it? Don't it? Are you entertained? Winter Sky - Speaking of Big Country, here's a new cover song I've done of one of their more beloved B-sides. The original was a soft, folky piece. It was very beautiful. For some reason, I started hearing it recently as a real rocker, and I just had to fool around with it until this version came forth. Hope you enjoy it, especially all you Big Country diehards out there!
Diss: "I started writing the lyrics to this one in Kansas City, Mo. Why that has any relevance whatsoever to anything, I have no idea. Anyway, it's the lead-off track of the CD and is basically meant to be a declaration of independence, an anthem of getting up over and over again after you've been knocked down. It's the first song on this project where I was really happy with the guitar sounds. I like the crunchiness and the different tones the two guitar parts use."
Diss: "This song gave me the most trouble lyrically. It was the last song I finished writing lyrics for and one of the first I wrote musically. I remember playing the music for my wife when I first came up with it; she asked me to play it again, so I knew I was on to something. If only the words had come so easily. I just couldn't figure out what I wanted the song to be about, what I wanted it to say. I had the title, but nothing to go with it. What's it about now? I guess it's one of those songs where the words are abstract, not meant to deliver a clear message, but instead meant to spark certain emotions. One of my favorite albums, U2's "Unforgettable Fire," is like that for me. I have no clue what a lot of those songs mean lyrically, but emotionally I know. Bizarre. Anyway, that's what I was going for here. A lot of people seem to like this one, so, here it is..."
Diss: "This song is taken from the last Dissidents release (my old band), Gunnysack, which was released in 2000. I like this song for all its changes and everything that's going on in it, although sometimes I think there may have been too much going on. It's a pretty interesting hybrid of styles, though
Diss: "This is one of the first songs my wife ever wrote and the first song on her CD. My first songs were big plodding opuses (is that a word?), and hers is an immediate winner. I was jealous. I played most of the instruments on this and did some backups, as I did on all the songs from her CD, but she plays some acoustic here. Another song I'd love to re-record sometime, as I was still very much a "greenhorn" from a production standpoint when we recorded this. There are a lot of great tracks on here, though. Just really well-written little gems. If you have any interest in purchasing this CD, contact us."
Links for more Diss music on the web: Diss: "A few years ago, a number of Big Country fans put together a great tribute project, and Joanie and I participated in it quite heavily. We thought, after the fact, that it would be good to put everyone's contributions online, and that people could continue to add their own contributions if they saw fit. There are a lot of great versions of some great songs here. Most of my stuff can be found under the name The Dissidents' or 'Thomas Kercheval' on the site." More to come... ![]()
