This web site is for "D.J.", our "
FIELD BRED
" English Springer Spaniel. Although she comes from "hunting
stock" (KB, Ru Char, Dansmirth, etc.) and her sire, dam and
a few siblings are active hunters and
FIELD TRIAL
participants ,"D.J." is basically a housedog / pet. While
some owners have strong feelings that these Springers have been
bred for hunting and must be used for this purpose (if you agree,
maybe you should try GunDogs
On Line
), we do not hunt or trial. "D.J." does get to "run free"
in our local state parks
for two or three hours a few times a week, "springing"
the occasional deer, rabbit or turkey. She gets along great
with other dogs and will occasionally run the fields and woods
with her pit bull, pointer and "wolf-hybrid / shepherd" buddies
(she loves those "big" males!). "D.J." has free access to the creeks
and ponds at the parks and, once she gets the scent of water and
dives in, you're hard pressed to get her out. She has a passion
for retrieving rocks under water. Her focus on retrieving a stick,
ball or whatever is so intense that she ignores all that is going
on around her (other dogs, ducks or Canada geese) concentrating
on that one object. To see a "hunting dog" swimming among geese and
ducks (only a few yards apart) with everybody ignoring everybody
else is pretty funny! After a three-hour jaunt in the park she refuses
to get into the car unless she pushes the soccer ball around the
field for about 10 or 15 minutes.
Only then is she ready to call it a day. On none-park
days, "D.J." spends her time in the back yard with her trusty
soccer ball or pursuing (and having staring contests with) the squirrels
and blue jays. Got the time, energy and space??? Nothing beats
a "field bred" English Springer Spaniel! (For hunting or just
a good ol' pet!)
