I finished extracting birth records from the microfilm of
volumes 1 & 2. Although the description says that the dates go to 1894, the
reel only has the first 94 pages of volume 2 which goes to 1890. I’ll order the
next reel later on, and I am not looking forward to the tedium. I need a break so I ordered one of the reels of the Hocking Sentinel microfilm. Reading the 1840’s newspaper that my
ancestors may have read will be more fun than extracting birth records.
I got my first graded lesson back from the NGS. The assignments were to fill out a pedigree and a family group sheet. I made the usual careless mistakes. I had someone married before he was born on my pedigree, even though I have the correct
information in my database. I repeated citations on my Family Group Sheet, instead of citing all relevant facts to one endnote.
NGS requires a coversheet to be printed from the CD and sent in with each lesson’s assignments. The coversheet has a place for a grade for each assignment. That
sheet was not returned and no grade was given in the comments from the evaluator. The
evaluator for this lesson seems knowledgeable, and her comments were constructive. I sent in the assignments for lesson 2
after going over them carefully.
I went to the Swem Library at the College of William &
Mary this week. It is the closest academic library to me. What a wondrous place!
The librarians were friendly and very helpful. I was looking for a copy of The Genealogical History of the Gassaway Family by William Kenneth Rutherford. I had
hoped to get a source to link Richard Burgess (1786-1872) to his alleged father Richard Burgess (1757-1821) who was married
to Mary Gassaway. Rutherford cited Rosalie (Lucas) Hartinger as his source for his Burgess information. I
have seen her name referenced many times, but have yet to find any citation that directs me to texts of her work. I need
to do a PERSI search, I guess.
I’m getting kind of maxed out on what I have to do. I have a stack of emails I have to go over and reply to. I’m
trying to put up good edited copies of register reports for each patriarch, but I am finding holes in the research and am
getting distracted. I do genealogy because I love it. When I get stressed-out over it, it’s time to step back, take a deep
breath, and chill. Maybe I ought to do those dishes instead of searching Heritage Quest!
