GeneHunter is the nom de plume I use for my genealogy activities on-line. I was
born in central Ohio,
but moved to southeast Virginia in the early 70's. Through
the years, I have worked in various fields including banking, retail, horticulture, and transportation. Now I am an
assembly technician for a company that manufactures fiber optic units for science, medicine, and industry.
For last 7 years I have sporadically searched for information about my progenitors with varying
success. As you may imagine, researching my Ohio-based family from Virginia is challenging. The internet, email, and mailing
lists have been essential. I borrow microfilm to view at my local FHC. I occasionally travel to Ohio
and Maryland and I often resort to writing snail-mail query
letters to small-town libraries, churches, historical societies, and courthouses. I use TMG 6.03 to record data. I use Excel 2003 to index census data and to make timelines. I use Word 2003 to for word-processing. I scan
photographs and documents to store on my computer, and frequently back up my genealogy folder on CDs. I use loose-leaf notebooks
to store hard copies of family datasheets along with supporting documents inside page protectors. And then there are the boxes
I haven’t organized yet.

I maintain this website
because I don’t like the way many people are “priced out” of researching their family history. I know from
personal experience how frustrating it is not being able to afford the copy and search fees charged by the best repositories.
My research has often come to a screeching halt because I couldn’t afford to get a copy of a critical document. So I decided to do what I can to
promote non-commercial genealogy on the internet. The result is this site.
