Quilting with Dorret

Dorret Dorret discovered quilting after moving to Baltimore from The Netherlands. More than 10 years later, quilts continue to fascinate her, and she has become an accomplished full-time quilt maker and teacher.

Over time, she expanded her horizon from traditionally pieced quilts to self-designed contemporary art quilts and fabric art.

Her philosophy is that quilting is a journey. Teachers like Melody Johnson, Laura Wasilowski, Jane Sassaman, Ricky Timms and Cathy Kleeman inspired her to move into new directions. She is a member of two very supportive quilt bees, Sept and Quilt and Quilters By Design both of which stimulate her in all her quilting endeavors. Along the way, she was president of the Baltimore Heritage Quilter's Guild of which she is still an active member.

In 2005 Dorret had the enormous privilege to spend a few days with the Quilters of Gee's Bend of Boykin, Alabama. This visit combined with the art works of Nancy Crow put her on a new path, where dyeing her own fabrics was the next logical step to take.

She shares her skills and enthusiasm by teaching quilt techniques and design to beginning and advanced quilt students in the Baltimore Area. And more and more Baltimore residents liven up their living-room walls with a piece of Dorret's art.
