Notes: 

Linenweaver and Brinksitzer in Hespe.  He is listed among the tradesmen
in Hespe in 1674.  He inherited a farm in Hespe when he married the
widow Heine.  Heine's parents retained their rights to live on the farm
and received an allowance of 4 thalers a year because they bought
additional land for clearing.  His stepson Hanß Heine received 10 thalers,
a cow, and a half dowry, in addition to 8 thalers from Hanß Hitseman and
7 thalers from Hartman Möller.  Johann Spannuth received 15 thalers, a
cow, and a half dowry from his brother-in-law Johann Wichgreffen.

be incorrect.  She was from Ohndorf.  She lived in Lüdersfeld[?] after her
first marriage.  Her dowry was 140 Thaler, one horse, a cow, a bull, a
forged Stell, and half the wedding cost.

Notes: 

In 1620 he was not listed as a house owner in Volksdorf.  He inherited a
farm at Volksdorf Nr. 30 from his elderly cousin Alheit Holle née Bose.
Her husband Herman Hollen had passed away, and they had agreed that the
farm should go to someone in their circle of acquaintances.  His new
wife was also known on the farm in Volksdorf.  In exchange, the widow
Holle was permitted to live on the farm, eat and drink with the young
couple, help with the work as far as she was able, keep one pig and one
plot of the garden.  If there were any disagreement, she would be
allowed to retain 2 morgen of land, 3 cows, and the garden plot and the
pig, and if she sold the pig, she could get another from their stock.

On 18 July 1627 he served as a marriage witness for Albert Woltemate.
On 28 Sep 1629 he served again as a marriage witness.  On 24 May 1628
he served as guarantor for Tileke Schekell in Volksdorf and on 21 Jan
1636 and 21 April 1638 for Albert Woltemate in Volksdorf.  On 20 May
1650 he served as a marriage witness in Volksdorf.

In July 1629 he, Tileke Schekel, Ludeke Wilhelm, Hans Weembbover,
Johan Heine, and Tileke Hartman angrily chopped down 63 shrubs
belonging to Tonnies Volckening, and destroyed a fence belonging to
Johan Engelking, threatening to tear down his house and barn.  They had
to pay reparations in beer.  In the proceedings it was asserted that
Johann Spannuth did not honor the church high festivals and only grubbed
for money.  As he had learned to read and write, he collected the war
taxes, from which he retained one thaler weekly.

On 24 February 1632, Johann was involved in trouble in Meerbeck.  He had
taken a firearm to Meerbeck and left it in a room.  A servant, not
knowing the firearm was loaded, shot it.  Lutwich Hittenseman forcibly
took the firearm from Johann and broke it into pieces, whereupon a fight
broke out.

In 1633 he lost one horse, six cattle, and one pig to roving marauders in
the Thirty Years' War.

In a marriage contract dated 15 April 1654, Johann transferred his farm
and house to his daughter Margaretha and her new husband Henrich Meyer,
keeping 3 morgen of land, a meadow on the Soellhorst, 2 cows and a pig,
and two fruit trees for himself.  A son received 15 thalers and a half
dowry and another daughter, Catharine received 80 thalers and a half
dowry.  The latter was later reduced to 50 thalers, a cow, pillows,
blankets, beds, clothes, and a half dowry.

Notes: 

Cathrin was the first person in the Loccum area accused of witchcraft,
and the only one to be tried in open court and with oral testimony.  The
court was held outdoors, according to the custom of the Middle Ages.  On
15 Dec 1581 a female neighbor accused her in open court of having
enchanted several chickens.  She was also accused of enchanting a
neighbor so that he was crazy for a year, and of using magic to turn a
female neighbor into a cripple.  She was interrogated and tortured on 17
Dec 1581 until she confessed in the presence of seven witnesses.  Her
confession also included the claim that she had had sex with a devil and
that his semen was cold as ice.  He was described as wearing colorful
clothing, black and red, with a black cap, black pants, and little shoes.
On 20 Dec 1581, Cathrin was again brought before the court, whereupon
sentence was passed, she was led out, and executed.

Her husband's nephew's wife was Gesche Barnewold, sister to the
Catholic abbot of Loccum, Johannes VIII (Barnewoldt), who was legally
in charge of such matters.  The abbot assigned Johann Brasse, mayor of
Wiedensahl, to serve in his place as judge for this case.  This may have
been due to lack of interest, though, as he often abdicated his
responsibility as judge to others.  There is no evidence that this case
was pursued as part of a Catholic/Protestant controversy.

The normal fate of a convicted witch was to be burned at the stake.  In
cases of clemency, usually shown after a confession, the witch was
first beheaded, then burned at the stake.

WIED.71 says this happened in 1582, but that is in error.

Notes: 

The modern version of the Pedig surname is Peeck.  He came from
"Pedigen Hofe", now Nr. 13 in Wiedensahl.  He was married at the
Kellerey Hof in Wiedensahl.  He died in the granary in the churchyard in
Wiedensahl, the same granary that he built in 1500.

WIED.26 and SP3.2 give his marriage year as 1443.

Farmer and cattle feeder.  He finished high school.  They lived the first
five years after marriage one mile south of North Loup, Nebraska.  On 2
Dec 1935 they moved to the new farm two miles north of Grand Island.
On 16 Jan 1964 they moved to Grand Island.  He was president of the
National Livestock Feeders Association, city councilman for 13 years,
then mayor of Grand Island, Nebraska.  He also served as president of the
National Meat Board, Fonner Park Race Track, and Memorial Hospital
Board.  He was president of the Trinity Lutheran Church congregation, the
church elders, and education and building committees.  He died suddenly
at age 85 of an apparent heart attack.
