The Philly Great American Vintage Guitar Show was a Incredible!

My wife Teri and I attended the show on Saturday, November 9th and
had a great time!  I didn't end up bringing any treasures home this year,
but I saw a treasure room full!  There were probably 150 vendors with
booths selling acoustic and electric guitars of every size, shape and
vintage!  Not much had changed in the three years since we have been
except the prices...just like everything else for sale in this economy
they were down a bit.  Still I couldn't find anything under $4000 dollars
that I would have wanted and that was too rich for my bank account
this year! I did fall in love with a 3/4 size 1956 Gibson LG2, but it was not
practical since it couldn't use it on stage and I have enough guitars sitting
at home now as it is.  Teri and I also ran into Greg, whom I met through
the Acoustic Guitar Magazine web-based Community, and we had a few
minutes to exchange comments on the show!  A good time was had by all
and I have the T-shirt to prove it!

Two newsworthy events for the NEWS PAGE!
Sparks & McCoy shared the stage with their sons at two shows
            recently...

At The Cheshire Crab Grill we were joined by Steve's son Sean playing
bass on the C'S'N classic "Long Time Gone."
Sean worked on learning the song while his Dad was out of the house
and then on the 23rd, walked up on stage and surprised Steve by joining
in on the performance!  Here are a few pictures, but the whole thing was
captured by Sean's Mom Lora on video and we will post it soon on the
Video Page!  Don't worry if you missed it, because Sean will be with us
            again very soon!
At our  next appearance at the Cheshire Crab, we plan to have not only
Sean and Josh, but also Phil onstage with us...the date for that show is
November 27th from 7 to 11pm...Don't miss it!

Early in the afternoon on Halloween, Sparks & McCoy played a two hour
set as part of the Weekend Music Series held at Anne Arundel Community
College's Bookstore.  They were joined on stage by Ed's son Josh on cello,
bass and for the first time, vocals! Many pictures were taken and parts of
the show were captured on video by Bookstore staff.  As in the "Crab"
performance, we will post the video on the Video Page ASAP!
Bookstore photos thanks to Josh Sparks and Derek Ludwig.

  • Final Summer night at the condo in OC...
    August 29, 2009

  • Sparks & Raymond - final show of the season at LURES in Crownsville!"
    August 21, 2009
Our last gig of the season at LURES Bar & Grille in Crownsville went great...it threatened rain, but didn't, well at least not until the last set when we had to stop for about 15 minutes.  We covered the stage with Patrick's large tarp and went inside for a break until it stopped drizzling... about ten minutes later it stopped and so we uncovered and started again...the crowd was so nice to us we ended up playing about a 1/2 hour over!  Our friend Bob Berlow took a series of pictures to document the last show of the season!.
Playing at LURES for this summer season has been a real pleasure!

                                                   Photos by Bob Berlow

The owner, Chuck Soja and restaurant manager, Mike, said that they want us back for next season (starting maybe in March of 2010)...I guess we have our first booking for the new year!  Thanks to all the great staff at LURES who made us feel right at home, and most of all, to all the fans who came out to see us and support our music...we love you!

  • Music on the deck with Sparks & McCoy at The Cheshire Crab!

The Cheshire Crab closed and changed it's name to "Props" not long after our trio, Free Flight Band, retired...they didn't have live entertainment... now The Cheshire Crab is back and Steve and I are back!!!
We had a great time and appreciate all of our friends who showed up to make the return sweet!
Steve and I have two more dates booked at "The Crab" in 2009 so far.  They are October 23rd and November 27th, both Fridays and both from 7 to 11pm...out on the enclosed deck!  Click here for more info on "The Crab!"

  • Les Paul dies at 94...
    August 13, 2009
A sad day in music history, he will be missed.

From the L.A. Times...By Claudia Luther  August 13, 2009 | 10:55 a.m."Les Paul, the virtuoso guitarist, entertainer and relentless innovator whose drive to produce the sounds he wanted from his recordings and instruments helped pave the way for rock 'n' roll, died today. He was 94.

Paul died of complications from pneumonia at White Plains Hospital in New York state, said a spokesperson for the Gibson Guitar Co. He had been in failing health for some time."

    July 31, 2009
What started out as a little solo guitar & voice time on the deck at the condo in OC quickly drew a small crowd of people who joined in the singing & fun with voices, guitar and the ocean waves only a short distance away ...especially a young singer named Brianna who joined Ed in several songs. • Sparks, Raymond and McCoy are booked to play for ARF!
    July 12, 2009
The Animal Resource Foundation (ARF) has again this year, booked us to play for their annual fund-raiser crab feast at the Kent Island Yacht Club on August 23rd from 1 to 4pm.  Here is some info on the event from ARF...

    Here is what ARF does:
Animal Resource Foundation is dedicated to saving and improving the lives of abandoned, abused and neglected companion animals throughout the region.  Since its founding in 1999 ARF has helped thousands of cats and dogs from the danger of euthanasia.  Special medical services are provided for disabled and abused animals.  Each animal receives routine vaccinations, are spayed and neutered prior to adoption and special needs animals are rehabilitated.  Every animal that enters ARF is loved and cared for as if they were our own before they are adopted to carefully selected loving homes.

Each membership, donation and proceeds from fundraisers the funds are used to help us further our efforts to spay, neuter, off-set medical expenses and to raise awareness to this very special cause.  It also keeps food in the animals bowls and helps maintain our adoption center while the animals are staying with us.

  • Artsy pictures of guitars...you gotta love 'em!
    July 4, 2009

Here is the latest picture of my Gibson J-100extra with an old washbowl and pitcher...

Of course they have nothing in common but I do like the way they look together.
I took it under natural light in my dining room.

I purchased this Gibson acoustic at the Philly Vintage Guitar Show in 2006...To read more about this guitar, just click on the image to

  • The latest picture of the Sparks "Cat & Mouse" lap steel...
    July 3, 2009
Here is the latest picture of my lap steel, still in progress, but progressing none the less! I can't wait until it's finished so I can LEARN how to actually play it!  Note, is is still missing a few essential things, like: strings, a head nut, tuning keys, pickup, frets, and my name on the headstock, but it's getting there!  Also, I intend to stain the cat (modeled from my cat "Gibson") grey, and if you look at the twelfth fret, you'll see a mouse... notice that neither of them seem to notice the other...just like in real life! Check back for more pictures as I progress...or click on the image below to take you to my Guitar Gallery page on this instrument...

  • Sparks & Raymond a hit at LURES in Crownsville!"
    June 26, 2009
On our second gig at LURES Bar & Grille we played to a packed house, or should I say packed "Deck"...We saw lots of familiar faces, which is always a pleasure, but also made some new friends who eagerly requested our flyer announcing our two remaining dates there this summer.

Photos by Janice Gilbert & Nora Scott
The staff there made us feel right at home, starting with an excellent cooked to order "Bison Burger" dinner before we performed.
Yes, it was a warm night playing outdoors, but the rain held off (for a second time), making it a perfect outdoor venue for live music.
The Deck is fenced in and private, holds enough tables to accommodate what I like to call an "intimate crowd" and allows us to make eye contact with everyone at some point during our show.
Want more, LURES just won a "Best of" award from
What's Up Magazine,of Annapolis, as the "Best Hidden Gem."

Live entertainment is a "summer thing" at LURES, so don't miss one, or both, of our remaining dates there this season.  We play July 24th and August 21, both Fridays.  Note: our 4-hour show time has been moved up from 7pm to 6:30pm.  Call ahead to make reservations, especially for large parties...

  • Pepperland Productions new digital audio workstation!
    June 21, 2009
Father's Day was quite a thrill  as Josh & Phil set up a new digital audio workstation for me to record on! I have been talking about getting it together for a while now and this past Saturday Josh surprised me with the audio recording ready super-computer he built from scratch, including a new wireless keyboard and mouse, headphones, and mini-cam!
All of that, coupled with the recording interface I had bought earlier, and courtesy of Phil, a fast and furious graphics card that supports the two monitors and gobs of extra RAM he threw in, came together to create one incredible system to make some magic on!

    REVIEWS:
    10/22/2008
    - My husband and I LOVED Lures. The food was phenomenal. His tuna steak sandwich was perfectly flavored, and cooked exactly how he wanted it. My crab cake sandwich was ENORMOUS and absolutely delicious. The desserts topped the night. The pumpkin cake and Xango dessert (banana cheesecake wrapped up with dough and fried, then drizzled caramel on top) were heavenly. I highly recommend this restaurant! We will definitely be repeat customers.   ~  User Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

6/20/2008 - Ate there tonight...I was told they've been open for about a month. The food was original and excellently prepared and presented! The atmosphere was very laid back. Patrons were getting up and singing with the live band that was playing on the patio. It's like the "hip, happening" place that the people who flock to such places haven't discovered yet, so it's still quiet and calm. I wish the Soja family the best of luck on their new venture!  ~  User Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

  • My UK Connection...Andy Stone!
    March 30, 2009
My friend Andy, guitarist and guitar-builder, hit the big time recently when he appeared onstage at Gary's Live Music Club in West Sussex England, talking about and then playing several of his own handmade instruments. Andy is known for his guitar "the Les Pew," which he crafted from a church pew over a hundred years old! Andy has pictures of these and his other instruments on his website, as well as videos of his recent performances, please take a moment to check him out folks!
Check out his site on MySpace by clicking the picture...

  • Sparks & Raymond are a hit at the Amish Country Farmers Market
    in Easton, Maryland...
    March 27, 2009
Patrick and I did a three hour set at the Amish Country Farmer's Market and had a great time.  We want to extend a special thanks to Dan for having us!

Over the course of the three hours we performed for about 150 people.  Not only that, but we made more in tips than ever before!
Even more important though, we met lots of great people,
including Russ Orme (pictured with us below after the show).

Reenie Chase, who runs the "You Deserve It Fudge Shoppe" right next to where we performed, provided us with free coffee (to keep our energy up) and at the end of the show rewarded us each with a box of her fresh homemade assortment of fudge!  We also got to meet and talk to about a dozen delightful Amish people. Three young ladies from one vendors booth handed us each a bag with two warm pretzels to eat on the way home!
All in all, it was a fantastic experience and guaranteed a return visit from us ASAP, possibly in May!
So, check out the Amish Country Farmers Market in Easton the next time you are headed for the Eastern Shore!

The legendary guitar store that served everyone from Hendrix and the Beatles to Clapton and U2 is set to close in May."  This post just appeared in Premiere Guitar magazine.

This is particularly sad to me as Manny's was my favorite music store on Music Row in New York City. I was just there back in November and perused the racks of beautiful guitars, including vintage guitars of all ages and brands!  I will miss them the next time I am in the Big Apple!
    Goodbye Manny's!

  • Ghosts of Sessions Past
    February 18, 2009
2-Disk Audio CD Box Set NOW AVAILIBLE!

From 1992 through 1999, I had a small home recording studio called “Pepperland Studio.”  During that time I recorded many songs on my own and with others.  I also recorded an album with The Free Flight Band, of which I was a member.  This is a collection of songs from that time.   The “solo” recordings are true solos, as I performed all of the vocals and instruments.  The Free Flight recordings are my compositions from our 1993 album “Uncharted Skies.”   The CD set is available at performances for $10.00.

We got a nice message from Joe after he saw The Sparks Trio (Josh Sparks, Phil McGuire, & myself) performing his song "Learning to Fly" on YouTube from our recent performance at Crofton City Limits Coffeehouse.  I played 12 string and sang, Josh on cello and Phil on bass.  Check out the video on the Video Page or click here.
