Guitar Gallery

Company: Martin
Model#: D28-12
Year: 1980
Description: This is another of the very special
instruments bequeathed to me by my friend Bruce Hathorne in 1993. As
was my Martin D28, this instrument was made before Martin began
installing adjustable truss rods, which to me was a step down in their
sound. The instrument remains in excellent condition with the
exception of a mark on the pickguard and a 1/4" hole drilled in the side
of the lower bout for a small jack. The jack was connected to a "Barcus-Berry"
style contact pickup mounted inside under the bridge, but it is no longer
in the instrument. Although they do hold tune, the tuning keys are
six to a side single unit, which makes them heavy and unattractive. The
guitars action works well when the instrument is tuned down a whole
step, which is the way I keep it for certain songs I play, but it could use
a neck reset for better action.
The instrument came to me in its
original Martin brand hardshell case, but unlike the case that came with
my 1976 D-28, this one was black.
