We want the newsletter to be as interesting, useful, and relevant
as possible. To this goal, the ASA invites member input for articles in
our newsletter, the APS
News. If you have ideas for articles you would like to read, have
an idea for an article you would like write, or
already have an article you'd like to submit, then contact the APS
News editor, Gary Haynes. You can
Or, specifically for Tech Talk, contact Gary Evans
- email: garyevans@cableaz.com
- call: 480-380-2431
- write: 2445 N. Travis, Mesa, Az 85207
- or visit: Motorglider Desert Beta Test Center ("undisclosed location"!)
We know there are many good ideas discussed in owners' newsgroups for
specific models. Some are completely model specific, but many would interest and
be useful to owners of other brands. Because of this, and because not
every owner might follow the newsgroups, please consider sending an article, or
at least summary of the discussion, to Gary H or Gary E.
Here is the current list of article ideas people have suggested, as of Jan. 14, 2006:
Safety
- Minimum Turn-around Altitude - a few pilots have done some
informal testing and calculations, but no one, to our knowledge, has
made more than a casual study. Reports by pilots that have actually
had an engine failure on takeoff would be great!.
With most gliders having a flight recorder in them, they could include hard data in the report.
- Reports
on accidents or almost accidents, particularly by the pilot involved.
How he got himself into the situation, and what he did to get himself
out of it (or wished he'd done).
- Safety related equipment: News on transponders, ELTs, satellite
phones, FLARM (while not specifically related to motorgliders,
motorglider pilots tend to invest in these items at a greater rate than
the rest of the pilots)
Tech Talk
Department editor Gary Evans is doing a good job with this, but he needs
some help. If you have a Tech Talk type submission, idea, or comment,
please contact him (see contact info above).
- Maybe your good idea (or someone else's) for your Motoriffic Glideroid 3 CT would apply to other gliders?
- Or you saw something in your glider's owner newsgroup about
trailers, self-rigging dollys, etc that the other brands should
efinitely know about?
- Fuel injection: how is that working for you?
Gadgets and other bits
- Battery charging: Have you discovered a better AC charger? Faster, cheaper, smaller? Or a better solar charger?
- New battery types: how aboutt using NiMh or Li-Ion batteries for more capacity?
- Main wheel tires: A heavy motorglider taxiing on the edge of the tire wears them out quickly. What works best for you?
Interesting flights
- In particular, flights made possible or better because it is a
motorglider; for example, flying from places with good soaring but no
towplanes, crewless safaris, straight out distance flights, days so
poor all the "towed" gliders don't even launch, and more.
- Maybe you heard of a good motorglider flight, or spotted one
on the OLC website. Find out the details, persuade the pilot to report
them himself, or let Gary Haynes know so he can check it out.
Manufacturer's reports
- Dealers - step up to the plate! Tell us what's new - keep it informative and nobody will think it's a sales pitch.
- Everybody
else: Did you see something interesting on a manufacturer's web site,
or read some good news in Aerokurier or elsewhere? Pass it on to Gary H
or Gary E.
