The ASA

ASA, Inc. is a non-profit organization founded to encourage the design, development and safe use of self-launching and sustainer engine sailplanes to advance the art of soaring by promoting:

  • Participation in World, National, and Regional championships
  • Mutual exchange of safe flying procedures, servicing, repair and maintenance information
  • The establishment of Soaring Records
  • The development of friendly relations between U.S. and foreign pilots who fly self-launching and sustainer engine sailplanes

Our Newsgroup

The goal:

The ASA board wants improved communications between ASA members on ASA matters and broad issues common to most motorgliders. This newsgroup is intended to complement, not supplant, the model-specific newsgroups.

The policy:

The ASA board believes the newsgroup will best serve this goal by allowing all pilots, including non-members, to read the posts and contribute. This policy will be reviewed from time to time to ensure it is in the best interests of the ASA and the motorgliding community.

This newsgroup replaces the newsgroup on the SSA server as the official newsgroup of the ASA. We appreciate the SSA's provision of the newsgroup in the past, but hope the additional features of Yahoo! groups, such as pictures, will make it more useful to ASA members.

Joining:

The newsgroup is hosted by Yahoo. It can be reached by using your browser to go to ASA-NewsGroup and following the sign-up procedures.

Condition Inspection Guides

A "condition inspection" is the experimentally licensed aircraft's equivalent of an annual inspection for certificated aircraft. This guide can serve as a model for your motorglider's inspection. Note: these are not "official" documents.

Competitions & Camps

Parowan 2008 Camp: June 10 through 20.

The camp is currently full, with a short waiting list. We're surprised at how rapidly it filled up, and regret we can not immediately accept new entries. Please add your name to the waiting list by sending a completed entry form WITHOUT the $150 entry fee, and we will notify you as soon as possible if a spot becomes available. Note that the final registration fee will be determined when the cost of the meals is determined.

Flights over the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Cedar Breaks are breathtaking! Check the 2007 OLC for flight logs from June 12-24 to see how good it was.

Dinners will be served at the airport. RV and camping space is available on the airport.  Showers available. Motel and B&B’s in town.

Tow planes available for non-powered and sustainer gliders.

For a preview of the 2008 camp, take a look at the 2006 camp in these pictures.

Click here for 2008 details, and more information on Parowan, the airport, and flying there is available at Parowan FBO and Region 9 Contest .

Malcolm D. Stevenson Trophy

The 2007 Malcolm D. Stevenson Trophy was awarded to Bill Gawthrop for his performance in the 2007 Parowan Camp at Parowan, UT. See his flights and the flights of the other entrants, on the OLC during June 12-24, 2007.

The 2006 Malcolm D. Stevenson Trophy was awarded to Monty Sullivan for his performance in the 2006 18 Meter Nationals in Hobbs, NM. See the results (daily and final) on the SSA website.

ASA Motorglider Nationals - canceled permanently

"The ASA board accepted my recommendation that we no longer hold a National Motorglider contest. The integration into the FAI and Sports class competitions has provided a good alternative to our contest. The Malcolm D. Stevenson Trophy will be presented to the highest placing motorglider at the 18 Meter Nationals.

Rick Howell
ASA Competition Board Chairman - March 2005

Other competition notes

Motorgliders can compete in any class they fit into as a glider, but (rarely) they may not be allowed to use their engine for launching. You should check the current rules of the class you are interested in, and contact the organization putting on the contest of there is any doubt.
