We are chess organizers, directors, players and teachers. This web-site is dedicated to our chess programs and promoting chess in the Hampton Roads area. If you need help establishing a scholastic or open chess club, please call or e-mail us. Lessons can be arranged for beginning chess players. TCC Club will change days for Oct. 14 & 21.   Due to functions at the Synagogue, the club cannot meet
on Tuesday, Oct. 14th & 21st. The meetings for those days are rescheduled to Thursday, Oct. 16th and 23rd.
I will reschedule the Fast Swiss event to Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. The Blitz will be held on Oct. 14 and the G/20 Quads scheduled for
11/4 will be played on 10/23.

TCC Fall Championship  
James Schuyler and Richard Skinnell finished with 4-0, tieing for the Club Champion. James Schuyler
won on tie break. There was a 3 way tie for the Amateur Champion (U1600). The tied players were Craig Haines, Pastor Abbrey, and
Rick Koch. Congratulations to Mike Sedlecek for an impressive performance. He had a performance rating of 1587 and gained an
estimated +155 rating points. Click here to see the final standings.

Scholastic Chess  in the Tidewater Area.  There are three tournaments now scheduled for the Tidewater area this fall and winter.
Oct. 4  Western Branch HS  Chesapeake         Nov. 15  Grafton MS  Yorktown                   Jan. 10  Princess Anne HS  VB.
Please let your scholastic players know about these events.

High School Chess League in the Tidewater Area.   A High School Chess League is forming for fall of 2008. If your school is interested in joining or if you need information to organize a team at your school, please e-mail me by 10/1/08.  This will be an after-school league with matches between schools. The exact schedule will depend upon the number and location of schools participating but it is expected that it will involve between 4-6 matches - half home and half away. The league should last 8-12 weeks with a match every two weeks.

Oct. 11-13  2008 Armed Forces Open

Championship for active, reserve, retired Military and ROTC students with Military ID. Free entry.


Chess study group  I have not formed the study group yet. If you are interested in a guided chess study class,
please contact me  by 9/10.  This is designed for players with ratings of 800 or higher.  The class will cover how to improve.
The study group will meet weekly for about 6-10 weeks starting in mid-Sept. The meeting site and specific dates will be determined
in the next week or two. If you know of a possible site, let me know.

 


Play Chess in the Hampton Roads Area

Tidewater Chess Club -  Norfolk    The Tidewater Chess Club meets every Tuesday evening from 6:45 to 10 pm
at the Beth Messiah synagogue, 7130 Granby Street across from Granby HS. Play casual or USCF rated chess.
Free to play casual chess or watch the events. Rated events have a small entry fee and require USCF membership.


Virginia Beach Chess Club  - Virginia Beach   Play casual chess on Monday evenings from 7:00 to 10 pm at the
Tidewater Community College cafeteria in building D – Kempsville building at the Va. Beach campus.


Williamsburg
Chess Club - Williamsburg   Meets every Tuesday, including holidays from 7-10 pm at The Williamsburg Landing
 5700 Williamsburg Landing Drive in the 2nd floor game room of the main building. Contact Tom Landvogt at (757) 565-5792 for directions and details.

 
Cyberwocky - Newport News 
Meets Wednesday evenings from 6:45-10 pm at Cyberwocky, 711 Brick Kiln Blvd Ste F, Newport News.

The club is free - there is no charge to come and play casual chess. Sets and boards provided. http://www.cyberwocky.net/.

Waterside  - Norfolk    Play casual chess at the food court at Waterside on Sunday afternoons. Downtown Norfolk on Waterside Drive .
