Military Chess Page

This page contains information about chess specifically for the military player. Another great source of information for the military player is the military chess newsgroup. Visit http://groups.yahoo.com/groups/militarychess/ to join and meet fellow military chess players and discuss issues.

SSgt Hipolito Nunez has established a new website for military chess players at www.militarychess.org. In addition to having a forum, and calendar, it also has a chess playing module where you can play fellow military players.

2006 Armed Forces Open.  October 7-9, 2006  An annual USCF championship held each year in the Washington, DC area in October. The Air Force is hosting  the 2006 event at the Historic Soldiers and Airmans Home in Washington DC.  Information is available at http://www.freewebs.com/armfochess2006/. Open to active duty, reserve, and retired military and Coast Guard. Additionally, cadets from the Service Academies and ROTC students are eligible to participate. USCF membership is required. Entry is free and awards are trophies for both individuals and Service Teams as prizes.

US Amateur Team Championships.  Feb. 2006. 4 regional championships are held each year with trophy awards for many classifications including the top military teams. See Chess Life or visit the USCF website at www.uschess.org for details. Several teams from the Hampton Roads area have participated in the Eastern USAT in Parsippany, NJ in past years and we are planning to go again in 2007. If you are interested in playing on a military team, e-mail me at eschlich@verizon.net. We organize teams, rides, and hotel rooms for those interested. Open to all USCF members but we try to form teams composed of active, reserve & retired military and Coast Guard. Teams can be mixed service but the really stiff competition is between the teams that represent single services. This is not sponsored by DOD.

Invitational Military Events

NATO Championships. The NATO Championship is an annual FIDE rated event. The US team of 6 players and a captain is selected from the top players at the Inter-Service Championships. The 2006 championships will be held at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, United Kingdom in Aug. Visit www.natochess.org for information.

Inter-Service Championships.  The Inter-Service Championship is an annual tournament sponsored by DOD open only to active duty personnel representatives for the Army, Navy, Air Force, and USMC teams. It is also a USCF national championship.  The 2006 tournament was held in Jaxonville, FL. Each service has its own methodology for selecting its team. Each Service normally requires a letter from your command that you will be authorized to play in both the Inter-Service and NATO championships if you qualify.

IMPORTANT NOTICE!  Our active duty Navy players have to show that the Interservice Championships are important to them if we are to continue to receive financial support from the MWR so the Navy Team can participate. Even if you feel your rating would not qualify you to play,  please submit your name, USCF ID, rating, and command to Command Master Chief Mark Butler at cmcbutler76@cox.net. Also include any information concerning your command's willingness to allow you to attend the tournament.
