About the Club

Chess players of all ages are welcome at the club and are encouraged to participate in our tournaments or just play casual chess.

The TCC is free and open to the general public.  Players of all skill levels are invited to come and play chess. In addition to casual chess, the club holds USCF rated tournaments. There is no charge to attend the club or play casual chess. There are small entry fees ($2 - $15) to play in tournaments. USCF rated tournaments require US Chess Federation membership. This membership can be purchased at the club. To learn more about the USCF, visit their website at www.uschess.org.

We meet every Tuesday.  The club will be open each week except as noted.

Upcoming TCC Events for 2009 – USCF membership required for all USCF rated events. Events are USCF rated unless otherwise noted.

Unless otherwise noted, registration is from 6:50 to 7:25 and first round starts at 7:30. Bye points will be assigned in non-prize events for reasonable pairings. A single half-pt. bye is available for prize events. I will post the 2nd half schedule around the end of Feb. If you have any suggestions for events, please let me know.

For multiple week events, I will only pair you if I see you. If you will or may be late, let me know in advance and I will pair you.

Directions to the Tidewater Chess Club

The club meets each Tuesday evening at the Beth Messiah Synagogue; 7130 Granby Street, Norfolk, VA.  The synagogue is located directly across the street from Granby High School on the corner of Granby and Thole Streets.

 If coming from Virginia Beach on I-64 West, take the 2nd Tidewater Drive south exit.  Cross under I64, pass the entrance to I-64 and turn right onto Thole Street at the first light.  Go about 1 mile where Thole Street dead ends on Granby Street. This is the first traffic light on Thole Street. Just before reaching the light on Granby street, turn right into the Synagogue parking lot. The Synagogue is between the parking lot and Granby Street. Be prepared to turn into the parking lot when you see the firehouse doors on the left.

If coming from the Naval Base or the Hampton Roads Bridge/Tunnel, take the I564/Granby street exit to Granby Street. Cross Little Creek Road and go about  ½ mile to the traffic light at Thole Street. Turn left and the synagogue is on the left.

If coming from downtown Norfolk, take either Granby Street or Tidewater Drive to Thole Street.

For those without transportation, a bus comes from downtown via Granby and there is a stop directly in front of the Synagogue.
