As Coordinator of the Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol program, I work with two strategy teams, in Williamstown and in Adams, MA, composed of parents, professionals, and civic leaders to develop and implement a multi-year program to reduce teenagers' access to alcohol. In addition to community organizing activities, I develop print advertising, including billboards, and television commercials.

To effect the transition of this long-standing lesbian and gay community center in Westchester County, NY, into a social service agency in addition to the social outlet it had been for over two decades, I

 

secured county funding for a senior citizens program.

coached board members through a telephone campaign for fundraising and membership renewals.

oversaw fundraising events and worked closely with the NYS Gay and Lesbian Health and Human Services Network to build a state funding stream.

upgraded the physical infrastructure.

revived a helpline by recruiting volunteers and designing a training program.

represented the agency at community meetings and before the Westchester County Legislature.

provided skills enhancement training for groups using the center's facilities.

As part of a varied portfolio, I  

created, found funding for, and directed the Youth In Unity Project, a program for teenagers of varying ethnicities, religions, races, cultures, neighborhoods, sexual orientations, etc., to explore how their communities might serve each other as allies in difficult times. The annual budget of $130,000 was raised by me independently of ADL's ongoing development efforts.

guided the Public Policy Committee in formulating a public policy agenda; ran policy forums; and mounted lobbying excursions to the state capital.

developed the board's new Hudson Valley Committee.

trained police officers in New York State's new Hate Crimes Law.

directed the Juvenile Diversion Project, an educational alternative to incarceration for youth convicted of nonviolent hate crimes.

represented ADL on, and served as co-chair of, the Hate Crimes Law Coalition, monitoring the new law's implementation and need for revisions.

July 1997-    Full-time Candidate for the NY State Senate

In the course of a campaign to unseat a 13-year incumbent (District 14, Queens), my team and I  

raised over $200,000.

won the endorsement of every newspaper that considered the race: The New York Times, Newsday, and The Amsterdam News.

assembled a 250-person, highly diverse volunteer corps.

secured the endorsement of almost every major advocacy organization in the New York area.

presented an unflinchingly progressive agenda by an openly gay candidate who nonetheless was not marginalized by the press or the public (winning over 4,000 votes).

July 1997      SAGE/Queens Senior Citizens Center

 

To establish the first senior citizens center in Queens with a special outreach to the gay and lesbian elderly, I  

secured start-up funding from the Borough President of Queens, the first funding ever allocated for gay and lesbian social services in the borough.

was responsible for all fundraising, public and private, major donor and foundation. Starting with $15,000 seed money, I built the budget to over $80,000 per year.

developed and conducted a press campaign that built an initial membership of 7 isolated seniors to an enrollment of over 200, with a daily attendance of 25 to 30 and special events drawing 80 to 100.

developed all programming, recruited and trained all volunteers, and provided group work and benefits counseling and referral to the members.

provided education and training to other senior service agencies unfamiliar with the needs of the lesbian and gay elderly.

Jan. 1994-    Hate Crimes Bill Coordinator

Apr. 1995      NYC Gay & Lesbian Anti-Violence Project

 

As lead lobbyist for hate crimes legislation in New York State, I coordinated the work of the Hate Crimes Bill Coalition. Under my leadership, the coalition

expanded by 30% to 120 organizations and officeholders.  

secured high-profile endorsements of the legislation.

worked with the NY State Attorney General to mount statewide hearings on hate crimes, resulting in extensive media coverage.

created a statewide (low-cost) media campaign by placing op-ed pieces in small-town and neighborhood newspapers.

mobilized local lobbying by grass-roots groups around the state.

spurred the Governor and the leadership of the state Senate and Assembly to begin substantive negotiations to resolve a seven-year impasse.

trained 40 citizen-lobbyists and created videotaped and printed resource material for local lobbying and mass excursions to the capital.

participated directly and indirectly in negotiations among legislative leaders.
